spongelevatorYou have not missed out on much, there are very few VNs worth playing. Of those worth playing, they are mostly as you describe, part-game part VN. They are massive time sinks too, so unless you really want to get into one I wouldn't recommend it. Yeah I think you're right for the most part about handhelds. Although I feel that the GBA is in a strange place between the GBC and DS. I would play either of those two but the GBA does not seem to be something I could return to. Old consoles have some charm still too, but they are inconvenient to keep around and set up. I probably have my old consoles (Xbox original and 360) at my folks' place on a different continent haha. Had no reason to carry it along, did bring my DS with me though. In the case of anime at least, most anime does not feature erotic content. VNs, on the other hand, are probably 95% 18+. So-bad-they're-good games are their own category, those are a lot of fun too. I wouldn't quite put Nier or DP in that category though. Nier has passable gameplay but shines in its quirks and narrative. DP is zany but intentionally so. DP is good at integrating a zany presentation with very serious and dire story aspects, the gameplay itself is quite bad though with some exceptions.

lazulumi think the fate series never does that intentionally, they just have a lot of long monologues, combine that with a not always stellar translation and that kind of thing happens a lot yeah, OFF is a freeware french rpg. it has a good english translation, and isn't too long. if you find yourself with some free time and don't mind some slightly-esoteric storyline and puzzles it's worth playing 95% 18+, man. i wish i could debate that but continually pressing "see random vn" button on the vndb doesn't help my case. maybe one day it will cease to be so saturated with that kind of stuff spongelevatori haven't bought an actual dvd in a really long time so yeah when i saw some store selling an anime for 60+ dollars i figured it wouldn't be selling at all because my funny phone has a whole keyboard on it, i can play gba games *almost* as well as on actual hardware. but without that, yeah, everything is more awkward than if you only had a mouse.

oi, it's me, the sponlavodor, and it's time for a topic nobody has ever dared to touch not even with reimu's 4m tall reimu stick speedrunning a VN the sheer amount of index finger push ups and finger boxing training you'll need to click at the disgustingly large 30 clicks per second with frame-perfect timing is enough for a lifetime of work your fingers need to be able to dodge punches from a mantis shrimp and endure hanging onto a ledge for up to five minutes to even have a chance at defeating the VNs 100 finger push ups, 100 finger sit-ups, 100 finger squats, and a 10m finger run every single day for fifteen years but trust me, it'll be worth it when you can 100% uuh steins;gate in 20 minutes after all that hard work
ok I do not know the visual novel though ace attorney's on GBA in japanese at least along with whatever other gba games exist I forgot other than pokemon and mother 1-3 and the most "pretty good" mario kart game I'd rather use a DS but only because I have no idea what's even on the GBA I just know everything on there's either $5 or $50 no exceptions old home consoles have charm though a lot of the time the best stuff gets ported or is easily emulated so I would probably only get something weird like a virtual boy and play all red mario tennis and jack bros lol I think VNs have that much of that stuff because it's supposed to be pretty inexpensive to make one but it'll still have moving parts and sound and all making a series of 20 minutes 18+ animations would cost more so they probably settle for VN type stuff I dunno though but even fate suffered that fate so maybe there would need to be a new type of game 18+ companies or whatever would want to use for them to go away AVGN showed me some real crusty games lol I forgot the name but the one I thought was the worst was that one n64 game with the fish that had a human face and spoke I remember at book off there were some anime DVDs of stuff that came out maybe around 2009-2013 and some of them were over $120 real expensive stuff and I'm not sure why I can buy forrest gump like 9 times for the price of half an anime season in america keyboard phone has a tactical advantage over chump touchscreen phones the optimal layout for phone tetris and phone snake

sponlavodor my friend i hate to break it to you but most vns have a skip function bound to control. one need only hold it down and swiftly click on the choices. you're thinking of playing high level rhythm games lol i have seen some crazy guys get that 30 inputs a second
unfortunately due to the ease of making a vn i doubt they will stop flooding the market with nonsense any time soon. all it takes is feeding text to a box, some moving images, a save system, and you've got yourself a new age medium. then again vr is getting easier and easier to make so maybe they'll move over to that or something. and yes the fate series probably has the worst stuff done to it. the original became 18+ just so it wouldn't get buried by shovelware and nowadays they've given up the main series to make an awful phone game
for gba i mostly just have the gba fire emblem games and some of the sonic stuff, haven't beaten any of them yet. a long time ago i played the pokemon one and i have yet to get mother 3 although i hear it is a very good idea
i think nintendo had a banger of an idea rereleasing the wii and nes for a short while, they should be doin that with all their systems. not only can they put more games on different hardware, could be good for people who aren't ready to put up 300 bucks and 60 more per game on the switch.
im super zoomer, haven't even seen avgn. jontron and the completionist are how i learned about the stinkers of gaming classics
keyboard phone is super tactical. half of the apps i've downloaded have debug commands that can only be accessed with a keyboard so i can do funny things. also when i'm trying to port something to phone i can use my own debug commands instead of having to use an emulator, very convenient. it's got touchscreen too which is good for navigation but nothing beats wasd

@sponlavador Never thought of speedrunning a VN haha Finally something I can speed run. Doing that amount of finger pushups you'll be like Bruce Lee in no time. With the GBA anything I'd be interested in has better versions on the DS I feel. Advance Wars works brilliantly with the touch screen for example. Or with the old Pokemon, Emerald is my favorite version but there is not much reason for me to go back to it. DS is also better for RPGs in general for anything I can think of. There was a Mario Tennis game on the GBC I remember, and that was one of the funnest I ever had a with a handheld, although I was quite young at the time. You're absolutely right, it's inexpensive to make VNs. Many attempt to attract buyers through the offering of 18+ content. Many more through dating simulation. I know exactly what game you're talking about, I laughed about it with a friend when we saw it at a Book Off (in quite good condition) not long ago haha. Can't remember the name though, on the tip of my tongue too. If you go out on a hunt and go from place to place you can find some very good deals. I got the first half of Zeta Gundam for I think about $30 once. Got the entire series of Macross 7 for $80, but its the rental boxes so the CD cases stick out the top haha. AeonEven better, go into the options, toggle skip unread dialogue and click the skip text button. Hands-off speed running. It's the 360-no-scope of VN speed runs haha That's the problem, the ease of making them. Low barrier for entry, if you ever visited the Xbox 360 indie section (Microsoft went out of their way to make it as obtuse to access out of shame haha) you will see the consequences. It was the same for shmups, bad shmups were easy to make. I see that Fate merchandise around Tokyo quite often actually, it's gotten to where I do not recognize any of the characters beyond the merchandise haha. Ahh I'm boomer zoomer I guess haha Although I do quite like that Jontron as well. Know of a lot of films because of him, Birdemic being one. He's a genuinely likable fellow too if you've ever heard him be himself on a podcast. Those are some neat benefits for a phone-based game now that you mention it. Never thought of a keyboard phone, almost forgot those existed, seems they've had touch screens for almost as long as I can remember. Never got into phone games so much, only one I ever played was one put out by Tonowi, quite fun. But yeah, wasd, nothing beats it. Feels strange even holding a controller anymore haha.

hmmmm kids these days with their fancy skip functions and computer devices back 'n my day we had'ta individually draw out each frame ourselves before we got out clickers ready each one'a my fingers got itself a six-pack an' enough muscle to throw a truck Vns are seeming kinda unfortunate huh entire xbox 360 visual novel wall of shame lol it seems like it'd be a unique experience compared to an adaptation though so the little gems here and there make it all worth it even though fate turned into a gacha game before I even heard of it lol yeah GBA has a lot of DS adaptations and a harder to find and smaller collection from what I've seen and the DS lite having a GBA port means rip GBA lol though a lot of the good stuff is from there or at least that time period so I still enjoy using the ol GBA SP sometimes I only played mario tennis on the wii with motion controls so I can't imagine what it'd be like on game boy color lol probably an entirely new experience on the gbc for me mother 3's a good one I played it like four times somehow combat system's unique with music-based combos though after a few playthroughs the combat felt pretty boring because you can OHKO most normal enemies by the time you get to the end of a chapter and bosses are just buffing and debuffing except I don't think it has as much of an effect as in SMT so it's kinda slow music is very good for GBA game though and the world and story are nice nintendo rereleasing stuff like gamecube and n64 would be nice because gamecube is around that early 2000's time where all the best stuff was coming out I found the fish game, and it's called seaman it feels like a dream but also a nightmare they're definitely fish but they're talking like humans and they still do all those fish-like things as well as asking for all your personal information for unspecified reasons such an experience can only be had once and it's quite an interesting one lol I dunno what the whole zoomer is I looked it up but I probably am not getting the full idea I'm still stuck in the obama yo mama era lol I saw some jontrons before and they're a different experience so if I ever wanted a certain type of video I had two options to watch whatever crusty game made in a week is being featured with a whole different bag of jokes lol is birdemic the one with those terrible cgi birds everywhere killing stuff or something lol if so I think I saw jontron's video on that but I have to rewatch it to remember the glory I still remember the day when those blackberry phones in 2012 with the keyboards were the fanciest thing ever and now phones are touchscreen and the size of a small television pockets are gonna get bigger to accommodate for those things someday I'll probably have to go over to the phone side somewhat soon so I looked for a keyboard phone that's good and some of those phones said they had 3gb of ram I still have another laptop I'll use sometimes and it only has 2gb of ram the day when phones start having 32gb of ram and can run dolphin on the windows 10 virtual machine using ios9001 is the day when the phones fight back gone are the days of greasy fingerprints or 9 hours straight usage, there will be no more phones lost to tech channels who cut them in half with a 1000 degree knife they will revolt against humanity with their newfound 32gb ram power also whatever happened to those phone games like doodle jump and cut the rope or whatever I remember playing those all the time on the ipod touch and then nowadays it appears to be the fortnite

@ebbxxx That's cool, always nice to chat over hobbies Yeah AVGN is quite well known, was one of the first big YTers back in the day. Has left quite a legacy, Jon Tron and many other big names got their starts sort of taking their own spins on the AVGN bit. Most everyone that watches gaming-related videos online have likely encountered some lingering AVGN influence I suspect. spongelevatorThe xbox 360 indie scene was an unmitigated disaster, but videos of those brave enough to sample some games make for funny videos. The xbox 360 VN scene was actually, bizarrely enough, quite decent (as far as a VN lineup goes). Chaos;Head Noah was released on it, so was the Phantom remake, there was Crossover, the Ever 17 port, etc. Even though most of those are not wholly original releases, still not quite sure why it had so many releases come to think of it. Yeah now that you mention it most good GBA games got released on the DS too. One of my favorites series while I was a young lad was Megaman Zero. The collection on DS was the definitive way to play them until the recent port to Switch. Seaman yeah that's it, knew it was sea-something. "Sea-critter" kept coming to mind but I knew that wasn't it. It's certainly a brave endeavor for a company to take on, don't quite know how you'd pitch it to a company haha Zoomer is just a colloquialism for gen Z. "Zoomer" being a play off of "boomer". The '-oomer' suffix taking on the form of a slang morpheme. You can have "doomers", "gloomers", "consoomers", etc. Funny and fascinating seeing language be tinkered around with and evolving in real-time. I'll reply to the rest later, long day and feeling a little out of it

lazulumah, the skip unread function. looks like you've got the superior vn speed tech if you ever get interested in the fate series, ignore everything you've ever seen for promotional stuff. type-moon seems to constantly make terrible decisions and you can only really rely on the actual writers to do anything didn't know he did podcasts, i'll check it out. running out of things to have going on while doing code, anyway. i do wish he did more things on films and games in his recent videos but whatever he makes is still pretty entertaining and high quality spongelevatorback in my day we had to download everything from flipnote hatena and go into edit mode to read stuff frame by frame gba was probably good for a bit but yeah you can do anything on a ds lite. nintendo should rerelease their stuff but considering a large majority of their games are functionally abandonware it makes piracy and modding easier. takes less than half an hour and no guilt at all to get melee working with netcode and rollback on dolphin because nintendo hasn't cared for it since release thats birdemic, yeah. i haven't actually checked it out beyond jontron's video but it seems pretty funny doodle jump and the like were great. favorite game from that time was "bad piggies", some angry birds spinoff where you kinda made flying machines to navigate a level unfortunately due to how much people use phones nowadays and how few portable consoles there are in comparison, its more profitable to make phone games that treat themself like a big deal like gacha games or fortnite. they'll never put a strict paywall in or even have an up front cost like a normal game, but damn will they do their best to make it miserable if you aren't shilling out cash. recently a pal and i decided to try out a bunch of those type of things for about 20 minutes each and see how awful they were, we both ended up keeping one of them installed. has very good writing and some neat real time gameplay, but still suffers from the pseudo "free to play" because the devs signed on with some lame publishers so the game wouldn't be buried. if we're trying to level up our guys we can't even play for more than like ten minutes per day. one day i said fuck it and plugged my phone into my computer to use mouse instead and now i only play it when i really think it'll be not lame. that might have been a bit off topic but yeah phone games sucky and when quarantine lifts and there is more time when im just sittin in class or mid transport ill probably just use phone to write or gba emulator

spongelevatorLogged on several times thinking I could post but would look at the clock and would have an appointment coming up soon haha I'll reply to the rest finally after some delay I remember those Blackberries always being associated with older folks. They were slower to adapt to the screen shot to my recollection. I've volunteered with elderly here in Japan actually and some of them take lessons just to learn how to use their smart phones haha I can empathize with them though, I'm always well behind the curb with new tech. Those new phones are getting quite big now. There was a time where it was all about getting the phones to be as small as possible and that seems to have reversed. I'm surprised at just how large some of them are, no idea how they fit it into their pockets. That laptop you have might be better suited to a museum Those smart refrigerators and such probably have more ram haha I am continually impressed by the leaps and developments of cell phones though. A single phone can do leaps and bounds more than the PCs I grew up with. Maybe someday before long they will have 32gb ram, I can see it happening, no idea what I would do with all of that ram though. You may still see tech channels try to slice the phones in half to test their durability though haha. Actually, I've never heard of doodle jump, is that like line rider? I think I heard that Fortnite got taken off the app store, not sure why or what the story was behind it. AeonI may try to get into Fate someday. I' have recommendations sitting on my shelf still that I have yet to get to haha. Someone recommended me 「魔法使いの嫁」(don't know how it's called in West), I see the first two volumes on my shelves right now, still have to get to it haha Jon's guested on some podcasts over the years, never ran his own for better or for worse. Everyone who's interacted with the guy has only had nice things to say about him You're right about phone games, I think it's the same low barrier to entry problem that's been mentioned. There are some good games but not many. Are you guys in California in lockdown? We don't have anything here in Tokyo, still go out and about when I need to (although I try to avoid buses and trains if I can)

doodle jump is just a simple game where you control a little green dude who is always jumping, tying to get as high up as you can while a killplane rises from below and platforms procedurally generate above. it's very simple but was cool because of its arcade-like replayability and humble style, i think. haven't played it in a very long time
apparently epic games (fortnite's devs), apple, and google are all not having fun together and each of them is trying to run some schemes to get the public opinion to favor them. epic tried to do something to circumvent apple/google's microtransaction rules, and got removed consequently for it. although, their rules supposedly were pretty bad to begin with basically just a bunch of competitions in capitalism
i've only ever heard 魔法使いの嫁 in the west as the direct romanization. my friends and i haven't gotten to it because we haven't found a complete translation yet, but from my research it seems pretty neat.
i don't think california is in a formal lockdown at the moment, but all schools and most businesses, at least around me, aren't in physical operation. from the way my college worded it, they don't expect to be open this semester which is rather lame considering i'm not a fan of online classes, but i'll just take the chance to get some mandatory classes done

I remember hearing the xbox as a whole did pretty poorly in japan for some reason was that a result of the heaps of junk they tossed in there, or was it kinda the other way around? I dunno though, maybe it's unrelated Ds has all the great GBA stuff either ported or playable on their, but it's really needing a Seaman port nowadays so we can simulate life itself on the go lol I heard a decent amount of the oomers but most of them kinda give the same feeling as a random guy yelling some strange foreign insults at you on the street lol honestly yeah I would pirate DS games because the scalpers charge half your wallet and nintendo laughs as you pay the same price for cooking mama as a new switch game or whatever also it's pretty specific but pikmin games, especially pikmin 2, were always hard to find like pikmin 2 was released on the wii as nintendo selects ($20) and you'll be lucky to find it under $50 with a case pikmin 3 was the only easily available and cheap pikmin game and then nintendo announced pikmin 3 deluxe for the switch ($60) and promptly removed pikmin 3 ($20) from the wii u eshop rip to anyone who wants to try out the pikmin games these days unless you ride the dolphin birdemic has some special crust so I'll probably watch some 240p release of it on dailymotion or something eventually lol I remember bad piggies my friends and I were all over that in grade school lol though we'd just try and make really big stuff and it would never fly so it just crashes and rip yeah those pay-to-win phone games seem to have leeched into 2ds I remember pokemon rumble on there you basically either had to play for like 30 hours or pay $20 to be able to get to a new area or something like that I forgot it's been a while but that really sucked compared to the wii pokemon rumble which was real good stuff it's kinda weird really because old people don't know how to use modern technology while young people can't figure out how to use most of that old stuff like those old phones one day we'll be the 60 year old zoomies who don't know how to use the 4d phone because when we try and pick it up it just gets knocked into the fourth dimension haha that smart fridge reminded me of that "can you run doom on (device)" thing pretty sure they got it working on a smartfridge without difficulty so that thing's going places in some areas I've been they require a mask and you have to wait in line to enter grocery stores and stuff though around here they don't I don't know exactly what constitutes a lockdown but I'd say this doesn't feel like one my school's doing online stuff though it really sucks because they didn't let me drop any classes at all so then to get out of having to take stuff like pre-algebra based physics and typing class for an entire year I have to graduate early and pay $300 for some online english class I mean at least I'll have a lot to do but this school year did not start off well at all hopefully it'll at least be in-person by next year so I can watch amoeba do the thing in a microbiology class

I am fully aware that the forum is very, very dead and there technically isn't a point in keeping threads in the right section, but I'm back and I've gotta do my admin job, damnit! -D3
