spongelevatorYeah the deep sea is an interesting place, sometimes fish from there get caught by fishing, but because of the differences in pressure they are wholly deformed by time they reach the surface. There was this one game called Subnautica where you explore the deep sea of an alien planet eventually, and it plays up the mystery and suspense quite well. Ah never did use those homebrews myself, but I remember reading about Moonshell and R4 cartridges for the DS back in the day. The Switch is a bit odd I suppose. I see them alot in public in Japan, but they're usually carried along in bags of one sort or another. Although I imagine the Vita is ideally carried around in a container of some sort too, doesn't fold as the DS or 3DS did. The Vita is nice yeah, there are a mountain of VNs targeted at girls on the thing though. I seem some interesting games on the shelf at Book Off sometimes, but the last thing I need these days is a video game that'll keep my attention for several hours haha I think trying out games and buying those that you like is a good way to go about it. AeonYeah that's what I like about the hard game-over states, makes completing the game a challenge definitely. I don't see many Vitas in Japan these days, on the trains I'll usually see a Switch, sometimes a 3DS, if anything. There is a larger library in Japan for the Vita, not sure which of it is Japan-exclusive when I see games on the shelves, but a massive portion of its libraries seem to be VNs targeted at girls haha @ebbxxx I'll bet, just not in a position to really go through all of that at the moment. Maybe when I have more time and disposable income. Can probably find a cheap Wii at a Book Off.

spongelevator80 dollars for anime dude, that's some dedication. subscription-based things are kinda lame a lot of the time but crunchyroll is doing good work if that's the alternative for me i'll do speedrunning only if it's more interesting than/the logical conclusion of more difficult ways to play. cave story my good run is going to be a "has 0 hp"-type, but katana zero, a game kinda like hotline miami in that its always 1 hp, i'll try to go faster. helps that it's not something that requires massive knowledge of glitches like an n64 game or a super long run over an hour. it's a nice, glitchless, 22 minutes on a good day yeah, you used to have to go through a couple things to make sure homebrew wasn't destroyed after updates aeon best 3ds games list: fire emblem awakening and fates, kid icarus uprising, flipnote studio 3d, project x zone 2, the ace attorney games, and ddlc 3ds homebrew. (all of these are a massive pain to get without homebrew, or impossible in the case of fates and ddlc). might be better to just use an emulator at that point since the 2ds is pretty tiny though lol lazulumnever got why there were so many vns on console. vita makes more sense to me but there's some pretty questionable stuff in a lot of them, can't imagine what it's like to have a ps4 and just play something like that in a living room if you've got any family or roommates at your house sometimes i check out the switch store, and it certainly has a lot of vns like that as well. i suppose they have an audience

lol I just imagined a puddle of anglerfish I saw a little about subnautica and it looks good but it's on all those new systems and stuff if I get desktop computer one day then I'll see what's going on in that switch is supposed to be portable and people bring them out but then they're still like $300 so then it's way higher risk than $20 DSi I do not comprehend nintendo's choice man I just want 4ds, where you can play picross 4d which requires you to ascend to a higher plane vita is nice because I can still play stuff like mgs3 without risking the strange nintendo apparatus most vita games I've seen are japan-exclusive and especially past 2015 when almost nobody wanted to bring that stuff over to the us anymore it's a mixed bag because some imported games are $15 while others are $90 better hope you're not buying oregairu VN lol oh yeah games where speedrunners use glitches vs not kinda feel like a whole different thing I remember seeing stuff like pokemon diamond speedrun in an hour and then they just use the void glitch 50 minutes in and are past the elite four right after usually I'll like seeing stuff where it's just pure skill and they can cut through a 20 hour game in a few hours instead of seeing link do frame-perfect twitches in the air for a few minutes and then throw a bomb and teleport or whatever that thing was though glitches are pretty fun to mess around with like being able to access blue pikmin early and stuff I was never really good enough at any game to speedrun so I would just mess around and play 10 hour games in 50 hours I tried using 2ds emulator but laptop aint having it so probably I'll have to do the whatever I did before to try most of that stuff out though I played through all the mainline ace attorney stuff at least lol I watched the first dai gyakuten saiban on youtube as well but then the youtube subbing for the second game was just beginning and like six months later I think only most of the first case was done or something probably it's done by now but I don't remember a whole lot of it so I'll see what is going on in those ones eventually I don't really understand VNs in general because I thought they were a PC thing but then also I heard somewhere that they don't sell particularly well so I'm not sure why they would be on console in the first place or why there's so many though the idea of getting a spicy VN on a ps4 and a roommate walks in as the ultra hyper 200% mega world-ending crust scenes begin is pretty funny lol

AeonYeah there were a lot of VN exclusives on the 360 back in the day too I remember. I don't really know many people who play VNs so I couldn't really offer a reason for that. A lot of VNs are dating sims though, so they appeal to lonelier people of both sexes I believe, which is unfortunate and reflective of a social issue. There are some good VNs out there though, ones that prioritize telling a good story. I remember playing Ever 17 many years ago, that one remains quite memorable. The Nitroplus remake of Phantom I did read a few hours of over time, I found it interesting. Rewrite is good for younger audiences, which is the intended audience, as I was when I read it. $80 is actually quite cheap for Japan. Incidentally I just paid $80 not too long ago for some DVDs, was quite a good deal actually, managed to get a very inexpensive offer from a DVD rental place looking to offload some of their older DVDs. It was technically about $6 for a DVD, which is a good deal I think. But if you want a proper Blu-Ray or DVD boxset you definitely won't find it for $80 haha Maybe if you are lucky you can find something for around $130. spongelevatorThey do become puddles, the infamous "blob fish" is a deep sea creature that becomes a blob once pulled to the surface. Yeah $300 is much too steep of an investment for me, especially for something recreational, would rather hold on to the money and read one of these books sitting on my shelf (games would distract me). Been needing to read on Japanese aesthetics more too. 4DS would be funny, or maybe a return to the roots with the GB3D haha Handhelds are in a strange place now because of cellphones. I see many on buses and trains tapping at mobile games now, a lot of those. Still see many reading mangas on their phones or tablets too. Yeah same, closest I ever came to doing a speed run was with Nier to get the true ending (which requires you to recomplete the second half of the game several times). Ace Attorney is one of those games where I have long appreciated the style from afar. Maybe someday I'll have a chance at one but not for a while. Yeah very few Japanese I know have actually played VNs, this is funnily enough why Melty Blood became leaps and bounds more popular than Tsukihime. Japanese guys I know that play videogames prefer titles such as Metal Gear and Call of Duty. The VN market seems to be concentrated, they don't cost too much to make so it makes sense I suppose. Some are large budget productions though, Nitroplus seems to be the ones to do those, they put out a fighting game I see on cabinets which is all of the characters from their VNs. Key is another one that puts out one every once in a while, but they seem to target younger demographics.

spongelevator 4ds... we can only hope. one day we may get super mario 4d, where the market will be revolutionized with his trength-based moves also yeah, dai gyakuten saiban is not just translated, but rom-patchable. i got it a while ago for 3ds, i think it also works on mobile, but haven't finished it yet if you like ace attorney though i may have something that would interest yougonna be honest i have no idea how the majority of vns sell. everything that's 18+ can't be on steam and 95% of what isn't 18+ isn't on there anyway. do they have them in stores? are there other digital retailers? i've seen some like melonbooks, but it's got no drm and then they just put it on mediafire and then somebody english patches it and then aeon downloads it. i've gotten like ace attorney and danganronpa properly but anything else? not so much lazulum every few months, i look at the vn database to see if there is anything worthwhile. i would say a good 70% of them are as you described, dating simulators or even more plain just eroge but sometimes they are cool i've actually played at least a couple of the good ones. steins;gate is the most rad a vn gets as far as i know. danganronpa v3 is up there as well, although similarly to ace attorney it's got enough gameplay to be called a "logic game" and enough words to be called a vn. fate/stay night is good if you don't mind the translation and turn your head from the forced 18+ bit. you mentioned tsukihime too, i haven't gotten to it yet but i hear it's about the same thing. surprised to hear that melty blood is more popular, but considering the amount of effort it took me just to get tsukihime to test run on a modern computer compared to just "download from steam", i can believe it. i'll have to try out both eventually though, my friends and i have a challenge where we are trying to go through everything type-moon has released, except for some of the biggest trainwrecks lol it's a coincidence that you mention ever17 because i just started it like a month ago. not very far yet, takes me a bit to set up because it really doesn't like my windows 10 and i've gotta pull out a 7 whenever i want to open it but it is cool and i will continue, no idea how long it is though completing half of a game multiple times sounds like a pretty substantial speedrun to me. longest thing i've ever run took me two hours on my worst attempt. i can keep up the fancy tricks for that long, but any longer and i'd probably get messed up

@ebbxxx Feel free to shoot any recommendations my way I'll keep them in mind but my time and resources are terribly limited however. AeonYeah those are the two biggest sub-genres definitely It's for similar reasons if you ever speak to a Japanese person, don't go asking them about "doujinshi" because they might associate that with erotic fiction haha. Of course many know that it can also include just about anything, Kamen Riders started as a Doujin, but the association is still there. Steins;Gate is that one that came out right around the time I really stopped playing VNs for the most part (giant time sinks). Always looked neat and I heard that it was a sort of sequel to Chaos;Head which I played back in the day. Fate/Stay was another one of those really big VNs that I unfortunately never quite got around to. I do know that the anime adaptation has one of my favorite lines though, "people die when they are killed" haha. I know it's out of context, but on its own without comment it always invites laughter. Yeah Ever 17 is fantastic, if only they made a Vita port. Last one the made was for the Xbox 360 I believe. would have to buy a 360 and a TV if I wanted to play it I guess. It has a bunch of new content I heard, great new opening too. If you have a PSP I recall that they released a port for that too. Yeah Nier is similar to Deadly Premonition, both are terrible games but brilliant experiences. If that makes sense. The requirements for ending D in Nier are ridiculous although there is a reason for it, I just kept using the spear dash attack and canceling out the recoil animation by jumping into a roll. Worked nicely.

Ever 17? I played that visual novel three years ago, mainly did Coco's route from May 1st to May 7th for obvious reasons.

lazulum yeah, even around english speaking people i've noticed that "doujin" has that kind of connotation. once told a pal that i was just reading some touhou doujins but he had that kind of interpretation and it took like ten minutes to clear it up all i know about the commonality between chaos;head and steins;gate is that they both have the semicolon. i think there is chaos;child to follow chaos;head, but they are only related very tangentially. fate/stay night has a few too many adaptations, the final in a trilogy of movie adaptations is releasing soon. from what i can tell, they always have a funny line like that. favorite has to be thisi kinda get what you're saying about bad games but great experiences. OFF is kind of like that too. hate the battle system and some of the puzzles, but it's still worth every minute. @ebbxxx you're doing better than me, then. i kinda got stuck in sara's route without even noticing how.

@ebbxxx Just in six days? That's good time for a full route. Been trying to do one on Phantom for years hahaha That's cool that you played it though, one of the must-plays for the genre it seems. AeonI see, makes sense. I remember sometime afterward they came out with Chaos;Child I think it was called. That would probably be a more direct sequel than Steins;Gate. Saw the advertisements and box for it on display a few times. Caught my attention but never enough to get it. Burst out in laughter as I read that pic related. Is that a gimmick with the series? If so, I think it's a good gimmick. First I've heard of OFF, is that the French RPG? That's what came up when I ran a quick duckduckgo search for it.

eh I think the only VNs I have ever played were ace attorney games unless I forgot something I've heard of a ton but they were always either like $50, on some foreign website, or only accessible with a torrent or a mega download from strange blogs and the game sometimes requires some strange patch where the link is broken too I've seen more accessible ones nowadays but I don't really want to anymore lol though I will play that one aya ace attorney I remember there was a haruhi ace attorney too but I never found the links
haha over here most dvds and a good amount of blue rays are like $10 or less because I guess nobody wants them anymore or something animated stuff is an exception though for some reason that stuff's still like $50 at the very least
unlike humans, blobfish thrives under pressure lol can a puddle of blobfish be in a cup like a liquid
one good thing about handhelds is I feel they don't really become incredibly outdated nintendo may create the new nintendo 43dsboy advance for the nintendo wii featuring yoshi from the yoshi's island series but the old stuff is still worth it I'd probably still play a game boy game on the go but I wouldn't play most NES games at home phones have games but I can't really imagine what it would be like playing a game would there be some touch screen pseudo-button or something I dunno DS has pictochat so phones are now obsolete lol the future is now
oh yeah with 18+ VNs on steam I don't know if they changed it but I remember a few years ago there would just be the VN on steam and then an 18+ patch provided on the website so it was like some sorta workaround? I dunno what's the point though
I remember when people would think all anime is hentai and then it shifted into all doujins is hentai lol but really I'm just trying to read my 4komas in peace where half the jokes get lost in translation so hopefully they don't think that eventually
I've played a decent amount of games where the gameplay is pretty eh while the rest of the game is real neat though I've only encountered bad stuff that's so bad it's good like big rigs with the "you're winner" or hong kong 97 those are real good ones though lol such works of art cannot be replicated

Actually, my brother and I got done with the visual novel long ago. It was back in 2007 when we first did it. I just wanted to do Coco's route for 2017, that's all.

spongelevatorThat is quite cheap for DVDs. I suppose you can find standalone volumes for $15 or so in Tokyo, but you'll only get about four episodes with it. Blu-Ray boxsets will startle you with their prices, they do come with a lot of nice nick-knacks at least though. Big Rigs? Hong Kong '97? I think someone watches AVGN haha Good taste. Avid watcher when I was younger, Ghosts n' Goblins is another great example haha I'll reply to the rest later, have to get some sleep, having a little difficulty thinking much. @ebbxxx That's cool that you and your brother share hobbies.

Dearest sponlavodor, aeon, and lazulum.
It seems we've come to a predicament. which is our favorite visual novel? if, and only if, it was my favorite visual novel, Kimi ni Getchu or, ババヤガ, therefore, I would agree with you. If you have daughters, wives, husbands, cousins, even, that seem to understand or like visual learning, visual novels, novel based games, or just, kimi ni getchu in general, i would recommend kimi ni getchu. Subterranean Animism is a novel based visual game with elements like story telling, artwork, and the blessed yandere character. my favorite character, however, is not in Subterranean Animism, because however, I hope you agree with me. touhou 11, scarlet of the night.
