i would say that you could get a copy of 17.5 on steam when it gets released, but the physical is probably cooler. zun doesn't seem to be in the loop about steam achievements, cards, and the like, so having the drm-free disc and pretty-looking case is nice.

Yeah physical copies look good on a shelf, there's always that component of them being DRM free too. If the game isn't too special I don't mind it being digital, but for the ones that have some special place I like having physical copies.
Picked up a box of JSRF a few weeks back at a Book Off just to have it on a shelf (no means to actually play it now, let alone the time haha)
I've never owned a Touhou game on steam, how are the achievements and cards? Are there just none, or are the achievements few in number and simple in requirement?

I'm not really sure how cards work or what they even are, but I bought mountain of faith on steam and I don't think it had any achievements at all from what I saw touhou 17 had achievements but probably 75% of them were just clearing the game on the different modes and extra stages and 1ccs and such the rest of them seemed more like normal achievements so maybe ZUN is just getting used to making them or something? hopefully there will be more in 17.5

jsrf like jet set radio future? damn, that must be a pretty cool thing to have on the shelf, funky boxart and classic game.
unfortunately, touhou games, tasofro or not, don't have any steam features. even the store pages are pretty lackluster, although that doesn't matter much because most people are already gonna know what the games entail. a couple of the non-integer games, and 17, have ingame achievements, but it doesn't extend outside of that. i can't blame zun too much for not doing anything with it because he's used to selling physically, though it's still a bit lame

spongelevatorWow, none? That's kind of disappointing. One of the only reasons that I may buy Hellsinker on Steam is the addition of achievements and such. AeonYeah Jet Set Radio Future, one of my favorite games. The funky aesthetic is really quite to my liking. It was only about 600 yen too ($6). Yeah makes sense that the whole idea of digital distribution is alien to ZUN, he's been working with physical releases for decades now. And physical distribution is still pretty big here in Japan too. Still that removes a major incentive to pick it up on Steam at all. Well at least it allows many people abroad to purchase the games and support the series in a way previously very difficult.

yeah there weren't any so I think ZUN pretty much just wanted to put them on steam it mostly seems to benefit western audiences but then I don't think any of the games are in english so unless steam games can be patched like normal then I don't think any first time players would get it there I basically just bought mountain of faith so that I can support even just a little

the steam games work the same way with the patcher, but 15.5 comes with a translation. i forget how close it is to thpatch's, but it displays kinda weird. dialogue still displays in japanese, but has subs at the bottom like anime or somethin i've got 15, 15.5, and 16 on steam, but no way can i pick up all of em

oh well that's very good then as long as ZUN has some sales every now and then I'll be able to get them eventually instead of going to the ol suwako 1-9's a shame though, maybe he'll somehow get them on steam one day so we can see legitimate EoSD sakuya sprite

Figured out my old login. Forum reverted back to how it was years ago when I logged on with this account unexpectedly, instills a warm feeling of reminiscence. spongelevatorMakes sense, I can applaud ZUN for trying to do something for his fans overseas. I remember one of the rare occasions that he went to the States, he ran into some guy cosplaying as ZUN and they took a photo together, you could see ZUN was really enjoying life. And good on you for supporting something that you like. I try to do that myself when I can. AeonOwning all of the Touhou games is a quick way to run up a small fortune and empty your reserves I'll bet, but you may have more official games than I do actually hahaha Which is good, I don't have much of an excuse. I do pick up the occasional Ibara Kasen manga though at least

pc98 games would take more than a drop on steam like the windows ones get to work properly, but there's a group trying to reverse-engineer all of them. if they were successful, and zun wanted to accept their work? could be possible. mima's first official appearance after so long, but it's only to change from .hdi to .exe
welcome back, og member lazulum. you regained your large post count, but the curse of photobucket with it
i've got the first volume of ibara kasen, i check it out sometimes to see if my japanese has gotten good enough to get the whole way through. while it couldn't by itself, the furigana helps out. wish i could say the same about bohemian archive in japanese red, but i mostly got that because i saw it for like three dollars on ebay

AeonThe PC-98 games have a distinctive style so it's nice that some are trying to keep them accessible. Maybe ZUN would just allow them to publish it themselves on Steam, would be interesting in seeing what he does. Appreciate the welcome haha Yeah Japanese is a difficult language to learn, takes a lot of time. Culture and history are also important in learning parts of the language. Corpus helps too (Chuunagon if you can get permission). Mangas are a nice way to practice though, purchased a recent volume of one called Break Blade, was a comfy read. Even if you can't read it though I think a manga looks nice on a shelf and is nice to have around. When I visit the States every once in a blue moon I'll bring some for some friends. Keep at it and I think you'll be able to read that Bohemian Archive one at some point soon Maybe I'll create a Japanese learners thread on this forum sometime. There's some important things on my to do list, when I get those done I'll create the thread and I think discussing Japanese will be fun.

that would be cool, yeah. i haven't progressed much in my japanese since quarantine because i was counting on my classes a lot so tips are much appreciated, probably would be for whoever else finds this forum as well. japanese is rather popular among fans of japanese things, and these hundreds of untranslated doujins and games aren't going anywhere

Alright I'd be happy to Japanese language is a very fun discussion piece. I'll have more time once I finish some major things on my to-do list. If you have any questions though I am fine with answering them. Maybe in the future we can turn doujin pages or something of that sort into Japanese lessons, that would fun I think.
Some immediate pointers I can give and elaborate on at another time: > men and women speak Japanese differently (much more pronounced than English)
> Japanese is a pro-drop language, so like with Polish, the subject is often omitted in conversation. English does not have this nearly as much, they're always stating the subject.

I found it pretty difficult to really know where to start at all because I hear like 50 different textbooks are the best one except people also say one isn't necessary at all and then they start talking about like 6 different kanji resources and another 10 methods to use them though I probably should have just done anything more than just kana and knowing that kinoko is mushroom and kinako is soybean flour and not the other way around it'll be another three years until I could get into one of them UCs and take a class so waiting for that probably isn't the best either soon enough I will have pretty much the entire day to spare so if either of you know best of the legendary 72 kanji methods then pls help

I only know textbooks for people looking to pass the JLPT exams, don't know much beyond that unfortunately. I'm usually not too keen on textbooks, but that's when I can design the curriculum and syllabus, there's a very real utility for self-led study I suppose. If you're going to learn kanji I have three recommendations: 1. Learn a lot of the common radicals first and independently (learn the meanings). It will help a lot with remember the kanjis, because many are just different combinations of radicals. 2. Learn the top frequency kanji. Found this: www.kanshudo.com/100mostfrequentLooks useful 3. Don't just rote memorize kanji, you're ensuring that you will forget them. Learn them in context, look up meaningful sentences that use them. Not some awkward textbook sentences
