Im just curious but does anybody else use a controller to play Touhou games? I use the Wii U Pro Controller bc Keyboard controls just doesn't feel right, for me atleast. I feel like the game was designed around a controller I think iirc ZUN played Touhou with a control at some point.

Personally, it feels good to play 2hou games with a controller probably bc its what I play a majority of my games with. Yea the joystick isn't ideal for the precise movement Touhou throws at you but recently I found a strat where I switch to the D-Pad for those moments and reserve the joystick for when I need to do more open movement. Also I have bombs and my slow button set to the L and R bumpers so its more comfortable to hold the slow button with pointer finger and have my thumb hold the shoot button which is my A Button which is also much more comfortable.

Anyways, I just wanted to share my thoughts on using a controller with 2hou games. Anybody else use controller?

I haven't played much of Touhou, but I usually just use the keyboard. However, I find it interesting that you use a controller, therefore I might consider giving that a try at some point.

Hardmode player here. Controllers just feel nicer IMO, but in a game like Touhou it always feels like I'm less... in control. Movement gets a lot more sloppy, micrododging is hard as heck, and it's easier to start panicking when a scary bullet formation comes along. In some respects that feels like a good thing-- every move has to be intentional-- but when things get tricky, it's far from reliable.

Used to play keyboard exclusively, but then got a new laptop with a keyboard that feels really uncomfortable to use. Now I sometimes use a PS1 controller with the D-pad and L1 on focus. The PS1 D-pad specifically is like... my favorite kind of control method. It's got all the nice-feelingness of being a controller with *most* of the control that comes with keyboard. That said, it's not as effective as using a good keyboard would be. Was able to beat Yukari with a PS1 controller, but that's about it.

Also I use an NES controller for PODD cuz it just feels better and fits the frantic feel of that game. Aaaaaaand if it matters, I use a PS1 controller for the fighting games. The entire genre, really.

I do not try to play the games no more since I would much rather play crusty fangames like funny gensou skydrift (bad) but I once tried a ps3 controller in ~5-6 of the games on normal before with basically the same results as using keyboard (d-pad working far better than the stick things)
I believe ZUN said he just plays with a controller always and I think I also recall hearing that japanese players are much more likely to use a controller probably because they actually get shmups on console
in seihou 2 multiplayer a controller with the stick thing actually worked the best for me because 90% of what flies at you is either a single cluster of bullets or a curved line of bullets

for me though I usually just used the keyboard because I couldn't be assed to get the ps3 controller working for basically the same thing maybe I could use a power glove or motion controls instead and that would be better

ZUN was sawn playing touhou 3 with a super nintendo controller in a convention back in 2020/2021(?) but I doubt it was built around a controller especially back in the years the windows touhous were made, I have never used a controller mainly because a joystick would just be input of the buttons then an analog input.
