How to get friends interested in Touhou? (Read 207 times)

I've yet to make any successful advances on my irl friends on introducing them to Touhou. I'd like to at least attempt to convince them it's interesting but I have no idea how. Any advice?

if they play rhythm games its free. just say "this the shit [galaxy collapse/border of life/insert iosys song] is from"
if they like fighting games (and have some level of capability with installing things) theres soku
bullet hell or shmup fan is too easy you dont need me to tell you

but if they dont like all of those fairly niche genres to begin with well
i frequently play games with mods on, usually including touhou ones. gmod and terraria have some solid ones (especially useful on calamity). wasnt trying to get anyone into touhou with em but my pals seeing and using some anime gensou girl attacks made em more used to it and i've played some rounds of soku with a lotta the people i know even if they aren't in it for the long haul

touhou is such a weird series, i really think you gotta seek it out yourself. the games are frustrating and short with hard-to-understand dialogue, a large amount of japanese mythology and touhou background knowledge expectations, and not exactly groundbreaking visuals. from an outsiders perspective i would say the only immediately cool part of them is the challenge and the music, as far as the integer games go.

i've got a pal who has basically played none of the official touhou games but is totally willing to try out cool fangames just because bullets are cool and some people do really good stuff with it so basically

I think the only time I have ever recommended something to someone that they actually ended up playing/watching/whatever was catherine to two of my friends and literally all I said was "is gud play gaem" and in the end they agreed "is gud" so maybe I aint the person to be responding to this thread
BUT I have also asked four people to play soku before with varying results:
the one who did vtubers and instagram memes (I do not condone these actions) learned of about half the characters though instagram memes (I do not condone this learning method) and ended up reading a few doujins and a manga as a result
the one who plays osu found a mild interest in the series after recognizing a lot of the music
the one who plays western video games remembered soku fondly but did not do anything further with 2hus
the one who watches western movies did not enjoy or care about soku or 2hus

in the end none of them really "got into" touhou and two years later none of them seem to have any interest beyond posting an occasional 2hu may may or a chillno so you can consider this somewhere between a 0-50% success rate but eh we had our fun and japes

certainly I would agree with aeon yeah you have to find the series yourself
maybe you could recommend fangames like DRPG fans might want to play labyrinth of touhou or something I do not really know
there are fanbase overlaps (for some reason I can't recall any right now but I've seen a fair share of SMTxtouhou or metal gearxtouhou japery so maybe those) for better odds but in general it seems outside of 2008 and asia it's a tough series to sell and selling is hard

I have successfully introduced 2 of my friends to touhou! The only thing i had to do was to spam pictures of cirno lol
