They're pretty neat. Instead of compressing audio, you get a file detailing the notes, effects and instruments, but not including a soundbank like a tracker. Instead, it was played using samples taken from a soundbank included on your computer. Back in the prehistoric times before everyone had a macsoft the same midi could be completely different between two machines based on their soundfont. The games used to have midis of all the songs during the windows era, and it's pretty impressive seeing the songs still be close to the original despite the limited choices midis had compred to being able to record a synthesizer. Probably got hard to keep up with modern music using it, so it's not like I can really blame Zun for not having them in the new games; just thinking of the percussion already makes my head spin on the other hand, touhou is big enough that basically every song gets transcribed in a month after release anyways It's a bit discouraging to try touhou songs actually, since every song has already been done, and probably done better than I can manage. Still, I guess you never learn if you don't try and fail the first few times. Anyways, here's homunculus nightmare from Len'en

i am a large fan of midi as a utility file but i haven't heard a game where i think a midi would sound better than a good ol mastered ogg. i first figured out how they worked when trying to rip a ds game's ost and realize "hey that's pretty cool i would do that too if i needed my game to fit in 5 megabytes" i have tried a decent amount but have yet to develop any musical skill so transcriptions are way beyond my level without me bruteforcing it, massive thanks to you and the other midilads for making ones like homunculus nightmare right there
i have also always pronounced it "mai-die". i am not accepting criticism

nowadays they're pretty much either novelties, since a few mb is literal pennies in space, or used for learning a song on actual instruments, which I've never learned to play. On the other hand, instrumentation from scratch is hard which is why the thread isn't .mp4 or .wav I have fun transcribing the songs I enjoy, which is where I got any of my musical """experience,""" but I can't into original compositions, in midi or with plugins. Maybe 4 measures of some melody but then expanding it makes me conscious of overusing it. it's pronounced meaty
