on a related note i have still been thinkin about posting about the forum in some places like r/touhou and a few discords. the amount of people who go for clicking around is probably few and the people who actually make an account and post even fewer but hey maybe more dudes and we may even be able to fill out a whole game of among us or hold some kinda fighting game tournament
so tell me if thats super funky rad or if i should not do it very much because i dont wanna potentially blow it up overnight without warning or anything

after over a year I still have not beaten eosd
got to remi and died on what was possibly the last nonspell due to having something like 99.31% completion
then again 50% of what I played was multiplayer pofv so I have too high expectation

I still have not heard anything about the timeline so all I know is it's more a generally accepted thing than an actually 100% foolproof map of the 4th dimension and probably beyond such people as us unless we eat our smartgummies

like how merry and renko is supposed to be in 2151 or whenever I forgot even though we know ZUN didn't go spend 9999 days researching it and making sure it fit exactly with his master plan to develop time travel technology and gain gap powers to create gensokyo real

in my many bumpings of threads I did not respond to and for some reason just now chose to respond to I remembered about the timeline thing
and so I came back here in what is almost certainly the wrong place to respond but it's also so right because we live in the wild west of forum

a few months ago I just went and looked at the timeline on the wiki for a good ol while and dumped all my findings in a notepad for later
I guess now is later
though I can't explain EXACTLY how it works I am gonna guess neither of us understood it to any degree so this post is not entirely useless
by the way since season is already in use I'm gonna refer to the time measurement of seasons as
well
seasons
and the actual seasons (winter, spring, summer, fall) as "quarters" because I have no idea how to say those without having to list them every time otherwise lamo

as warned on the wiki this is all conjecture and it's entirely possible the way I found how the dates worked is even weaker than the methods they used (though this is still pretty decent)
but like 70% of touhou canon is weak conjecture based off of 5 lines of dialogue anyway so in 2hus spirit here we go:

he spoke of the whole sixty-years flower event, and ended it with "This year is that 60th year."
it sounds very very stupid but this alone is actually enough to get a general sense of the entire timeline (or to begin creation of one)
I forgot where but I believe ZUN also stated that touhou takes place in current day, meaning we can assume pretty strongly that PoFV takes place around 2005 or so
if it turns out he didn't say this it could be possible that 2hus takes place in 2065 or something because iphones and whatever already exist and fall into gensokyo
I'd hope that there isn't still sumireko talking about how she'll cancel raymoo on twitter or whatever 44 years from now in touhou canon
but I am gonna go on assuming ZUN actually did say this so uuh



BAiJR, being the first time the season system was used, places articles and incidents in seasons
and PoFV is in season 120
EoSD is in 118 and PCB is in 119 which would place them in 2003 and 2004 respectively which is weird because that's a year after they were released
in marisa's article (which took place in season 118) the scarlet mist incident was said to take place "one month ago" and marisa (in current day) says it was "about two years ago" which means it definitely is supposed to be in 2003 and not 2002
this also shows that seasons basically equal years because an article written two seasons ago took place "about two years ago" so we can be sure that seasons are not quarters
ZUN said 2005 was the same year as PoFV so we really only have a single real-life year to go on and it makes some stuff kinda weird like that though

either way go back 120 seasons/years and you reach 1885, which is a very familiar number
the estimated year in which the hakurei barrier was created
I am guessing season 0 is the beginning of gensokyo and not just some arbitrary starting point and the wiki also states that 1885 is an assumption but we know there's at least been 120 years since its creation
past that though, you can kinda only tell that things take place in chronological order and maybe be able to narrow down the seasons by the quarter the media takes place in
if you look at stuff on the timeline past SoPM, which was the last time the "season" system showed up more than like
twice in a book 
it's all pretty vague
it goes from near-precise dates to general dates to months to literally just the quarter
you are literally able to tell when ZUN released an artbook because all the dates on the timeline around those years are precise (well except for SoPM because those take place all over the timeline) compared to "this one is in winter of this year probably"
you can see if they say "the cherry blossoms are pretty" or "it's so cold" and narrow down the quarter and year it takes place in and since the mangas are chronological you can put a timeline together that way
but there's not much else for newer stuff (past 2012)

I don't know exactly how they narrowed down the months but probably it's the same process as just putting things in chronological order

pretty sure integer toho runs 1:1 with real so games always take place vaguely around [present time, present day]. there is actual evidence beyond the dates listed on the wiki's timeline but i cant think of too much right now aside from "yukari has a gameboy", "chimata is sad partially because of covid", and "sumireko is a zoomer"

there's some date discrepancy between real world and BAiJR but the stuff I've seen is by no more than a year so I can now say with confidence
"close enough"

the flowers thing is known as "The Sixty Year Cycle Great Barrier Incident" in BAiJR so I think it probably began occurring when the barrier was created but I don't think it was stated clearly at any point
also yeah as you said it can only have happened a maximum of two times (season X and season 60) if we assume season X is the creation of the barrier and that this only happens when the barrier is up
so I have no idea if they just saw it happen twice and the third time they thought "okay this probably just happens every 60 years then" or what

when it comes to 8-14 I am sorry to say but that's like
the prime time to ensure everything happened in order
like 7.5 was released after 8 but ZUN said in its omake something like "despite the release dates the games occur in numbered order"
and in 9 you can see characters from 8 know each other already

i'd guess the barrier has a general technology gap of like 15-20 years, maybe less if you are smart guy rinnosuke poking around everywhere. it'll probably get faster though since more things are being made to replace stuff quickly. not sure how it looks for non-tech, though. probably harder for things like books to go out of use.

for almost two years we have been stuck on how the timeline was able to narrow down articles by month (well more like "on two occasions within the past two years" I suppose)
and today I remembered this so I spent literally twenty minutes looking at the timeline again and "figured it out" to put it nicely
hell it took longer to write this post explaining it than it took to find it

literally only youkai mountain uses this calendar anymore (annoying!) and it's said to be much easier for youkai to use due to their connection to the moon 
apparently they have no concept of days which is why there are few exact dates on here (some appear to be exact but when clicking on the article it's revealed to actually be an estimate)
for some reason bougetsushou has a lot of exact dates on both wikis (they aren't just incorrectly entered like the articles on the english wiki) but I do vaguely recall SSiB mentioning the passing of days as the rocket was built or something so that might be how
chapter 1 of CiLR takes place on "the day of the monthly lunar festival" so probably it starts there but I can't be assed to figure that whole thing out so I'll just assume it's true

every three years the youkai calendar just extends a month to account for the inaccuracy of the system

and it turns out this is august in the lunar calendar
luckily china uses the lunar calendar so after trying about five converters that literally did not work I came across this one which does work

this and the information in the previous posts here appears to be pretty much everything used to create the timeline excluding stuff like mythology/real life and apparently mentions within the games (I heard kasen said in ULiL that the barrier was 130 years old but I couldn't find where)
so as you can see this timeline is built on pretty shaky foundations
I got my information on the stuff from earlier basically by sheer coincidence (looked at ZUN illustrations and saw something relevant) but this one is just plainly explained and all I had to do was read it and then test it out and confirm it's how they did this

anyway I guess the mystery has been solved and now we can spend 99999 years creating the timeline from the ground up, starting with the big bang and also not forgetting to read 5000 books on japanese mythology to see when the guy did the thing that made the stuff happen
