Mystic Square's theme is a pretty good theme from PC-98, even if it's not a very title theme-esque track.

and 4 starts takin it in a different direction than zun did entirely

I've thought bpohc is a bit like 7.5, where it's not really a big plot and mostly set up for everyone to fight each other, following rmi which was basically pcb.
Also, Burst Overflow is burned in my memory after Prime Minister in Black.

ok I am not good at explaining but I have quite some to say on this uuh
music-related matter
but I also shan't create a new thread for the topic in proper "to any users that come here i guess" etiquette
pray forgive the inconvenience of 10 paragraphs filled with grammarless, choppy masses of poorly formatted english

yeah both the stories and gensokyo's geography are far less abstract these days
there are still a few minor locations we don't know much about but then again it's not exactly easy to make a minor location relevant 
and ZUN saying he prefers to write about modern events now means unless terry crews explodes the moon we likely won't be seeing any wacky wonders anymore
also okki becoming new yukarin




there is makai and the moon and dream world and hell along with the current and hifuuaged outside world but I feel those almost have the opposite issue which is the fact that they aren't gensokyo
since raymoo is the protagonist 95% of the time ZUN is gonna have to make her go there instead of having a game from the point of view of someone in the location
so most non-gensokyo locations show up like two times
we know hell is basically chaos's "might makes right" and there's a whole political turmoil thing going on down there currently which is attempting to give it structure (also hell debt lol) and the lunar capital is basically gensokyo's rival and filled with purity
or how current day outside world is well

and how hifuu outside world is filled with artificial experiences to the point where there are no longer bamboo shoots and such
but since there are so many of those locations and none of them are gensokyo we kinda just have to hope they show up again eventually
even hifuu which is one of few exceptions to "raymoo is the protagonist" and had a good amount of worldbuilding without being too much seems to have been half replaced by sumireko even though the current day outside world doesn't seem like it's of particular interest to us current-day outside worlders

speaking of sumireko 
I actually do not know a whole lot about her so if I am wrong about this please say
but based on her descriptions and the dialogue I've seen of her she is basically merry except ESP with the last name of renko and the "genius" of yumemi along with the concept of the secret sealing club and then ZUN just kinda
plopped her 100-150 years before hifuu
I know she's got a doppelganger (I don't remember MY usami being that stretchy!) and she goes to gensokyo through her dreams often (also the dream world in VD) but I don't know how ZUN explains her existing without renko ever mentioning her despite sumireko going to gensokyo and also renko's significant interest in gensokyo
and also what's with her psychic powers (renko is 100% normal and never mentioned to have a supernatural family history by herself or anyone else)
you would expect that if renko had a genius ancestor with supernatural powers and frequent travel to gensokyo that she'd know and talk about her
even the explanation "there was like 150 years between them so they might be too far apart" doesn't sound completely plausible considering how noteworthy her existence would be to a normal person ("what??? my family member can teleport, float, and travel to locations outside of this world??? I'm gonna tell MY kids about this!")
and why is the origin of the secret sealing club suddenly sumireko in a tokyo high school as opposed to a kyoto university over a hundred years later/ how did the club get created in a kyoto university without any mention of sumireko being its founder 
now that I think of it if sumireko wasn't related to renko at all or the time gap is even larger it would probably make more sense but I don't know enough to say that with anything more than 25% confidence considering all of this is just what I could tell from what I've seen and heard
and there's also the possibility that this all has a simple explanation I somehow missed or a conclusion I never reached (every discussion I see of sumireko is "I hate violet detector" so I have no idea if people find these things strange or if it's only me)
it's also not contradictory or anything but it does make her feel out of place like a new character shoehorned into an ATLUS rerelease (looking at you p3p, p4g, p5r, sjr, and catherine full body)
I am tired of hearing sumireko is renko's ancestor merry is yukarin and absolutely nothing else about hifuu we musn't let this continue
now we must say sumireko and renko are unrelated and sumireko is also yukarin
kill two stones with one stone and the bird has no relation to this tragedy

also back to hell there's supposed to be like
different hells for different locations and also current and former hell (along with a bunch of locations in the afterlife in general) right
honestly all the hells is pretty weird it kinda just seems like if it aint on the earth or the moon it's gonna be hell both due to lack of other settings and its expansiveness
though the only media that actually fully focuses on hell is like
atari breakout and 17+.5 
unlike gensokyo I could actually see hell being focused on for like 25 years and still have lots of potential and mystery because you can just say "oh yeah that last game focuses on 1/∞ of hell meaning you quite literally know zero"
but for now it's just heck and eiki shiki yo mama (everyone in hell is cool!)


and when speaking of the lunar capital that's kinda like
a small setting with a lot of unknowns because it's existed for quite a while and you also have gods (gods?) there that are millions of years old
and the only way to find out about those gods are to read up on real world mythology which doesn't necessarily match up with 2hus at all
and there was the whole yukarin invasion she became infamous for and the "lunar wars" which may or may not be a gargantuan overreaction to a flag being put on the moon (possibly on the other hand the current day outside world is aware of the existence of the lunar capital and/or actually did something but since toyohime can make turn the moon into the scientific version I do not know how it went down in toho)
there also seems to be a lot of people who hate the entire lunar capital and everyone in it because of the whole purity superiority thing but then again they are straight up weak to life so I'd think the mindset was intentionally spread so they don't bring fairies to the moon and everyone dies
lunar capital does not show up enough for me or anyone else to know for sure though so for now it'll sadly remain "dictator moon" and there will never be able to be discussions about the moon without someone talkin about h1tl0r
there's basically just like one and a half manga/books because CiLR is just SSiB+ and also lolk ZUN more moonies pls

at the first of two ends to this post I shall say gensokyo being the main setting kinda makes it so the other places can never be expanded to the extent of gensokyo without completely ignoring gensokyo or straight up changing the main setting/main characters
I would say that's a good thing because it would ensure we don't know every square inch and resident of the moon or every crust vegetable of hifuutimes but it also ends up being "you will never find out about more than 1/1000th of hell" and "who's shinki?"

ok I forgot but there are actually two ways for those to be talked about without having to "leave gensokyo"
the first being akyuu's stuff (but we haven't gotten one in 9 years and usually responses to akyuu writings are plagued with "akyuu is unreliable") or the artbooks in general
and the second being ZUN himself in interviews and other miscellaneous things (omake, SCoOW even though that one isn't written by ZUN) that happen outside of the series
a decent amount of that hell stuff I'm pretty sure I read about in a ZUN interview
we haven't gotten too many artbooks in recent years though and ZUN interviews are far more likely to be about development but I shall mention those because I always liked those the most


I think toutetsu just wanted to be the fat cat of the animal realm
by absorbing the blood she would gain a lot of power and all the desire and malice in the blood
and I think it was supposed to be that she slipped into the lake of blood during the wbawc incident so nobody would notice but okki did and now it's an incident

multi game plot from 10-13 was cool but I have no idea how it works after that

connections between the spinoffs and main games like 14.5-lolk instead of them being separate and 17-17.5
or is there more than that
I remember characters from new games would show up in the manga suddenly (and the other way around in a few cases) but I only remember events from the manga influencing games with fairies causing fairy wars so I do not really know


ok now in proper "favorite themes" etiquette
IN has one of the best soundtracks I'd say
it fits the atmosphere of the game along with the nice ass nighttime danmaku and eientei
though I always get stage 1+boss+2+boss confused because for some reason if I hear one I think it's all four and have to check what I'm even hearing to identify it
IN has voyage as well so that's one free point added to the score

also soku has some of the best stuff but it's kinda weird
because when saying soku is it just soku's ost or is it all the songs in the game "Touhou (Hisoutensoku) Unperceiving of Natural Law ~ Chase the Enigma of the Gargantuan Guignoland" and therefore swr+soku
honestly I don't know but if I did know I would have said both TD and soku(swr+soku)

with TD though everything is very good AND there's spirit world versions which are just as good yet frequently are different enough to alter the feeling of the song
so you get like 1.5-2 particulary good OSTs in one
it may not have voyage stage 6 but instead it has miko disco which I will gladly take
in fact TD is the only game I remember particularly liking every stage theme in
I think stage 1 boss is the only theme I don't particularly care for but it aint even bad

Man, do I have favorite themes lemme tell you

First up Diao ye Zong (Chen's Theme) - Of course this is very baised of me bc I love Chen so much and I've said this before but I just find something cozy about her theme... for some reason.

A Dream more Scarlet than Red - The title theme of EoSD just OOZES of this feeling like you stepping into the doorways of Gensokyo itself. It feels me of this sense of nostalgia since EoSD was my first game. No other title themes I like more than this one Except for Theme of Eastern Story


Gensokyo Millennium ~ History of The Moon (Eirin's theme) - This is one of my FAVORITE final boss themes (better than Kaguya's). This one just sound so magestic yet so powerful at the same time. This one being my all time favorite remix of the theme. 

Pure Furies ~ Wearbouts of The Heart (Junko's theme) - even tho I've heard many stories about Junko's fight, I really REALLY love her theme. It just SCREAMS of Final Boss like the fate of the world is in this one fight.

Greenwich in The Sky - This theme's funky and weird... and I LOVE IT. It feels like some wicked fight is going on and prolly fits in a game like Earthbound probably. This song makes this theme 10x better it's very catchy.

Lunar Clock ~ Luna Dial (Sakuya's theme) - In the words of ZUN, "You can't have a maid without hard rock" I like this theme over Flowering Knights bc I like how hardcore it makes Sakuya. I like to think Sakuya's just plain badass which is prolly why she's my favorite maid to ever maid.

A Maiden's Illusionary Funeral ~ Necro Fantasy (Ran's theme) - This theme just kicks ass. That's it. Why does Necrofantasia feel like a downgrade to this one...

necro fantasy vs necrofantasia was another weird thing
almost everyone prefers necrofantasia but it almost seems like ZUN regretted making it yukarin!'s theme
because he proceeded to make evening star and suddenly that's her theme except not always
ran was never playable so I don't know if she would have gotten necro fantasy as her main theme and yukarin! would get evening star or what
also there's necro fantasy being in english and having "a maiden's illusionary funeral"/少女幻葬 before it compared to necrofantasia being in katakana (ネクロファンタジア) but that does not matter at all it just looks weird
honestly I don't care which one I hear anymore but music cd versions>>>>>pcb or anything else
necro fantasy in ghostly field club is very good to fit the night setting
and necrofantasia in magical astronomy goes well with the limitless feeling of space

As someone who started from the beginning and has experienced everything mostly in chronological order, it feels really weird to go from nonsensical plots like "hey go beat up some lady in a mansion" and "oh hey theres some random sciencey human from an unspecified other dimension" and plot twists like "reimu's yin yang orb can turn into a cat somehow" to... lore, I guess. I've wanted to keep up on the epic worldbuilding of Gensokyo, but now that I'm at Mountain of Faith, that's gotten a little intimidating.

So far, PCB is my favorite game specifically because of how "cozy" the atmosphere is. It starts so serene and keeps building itself up, getting more and more intense and epic, but always keeps a sense of mystique.

Yeah, Luna Dial is so different from pretty much all other 2hu music I've heard, and that makes it so awesome. I dunno what changed, but Sakuya really does seem less cool/interesting after EoSD. Maybe it's the theme change, maybe it's the art change (EoSD art is beautiful and you can never tell me otherwise), maybe it's the fact she's not a "villain" afterwards.

"Necro-Fantasy > Necrofantasia" has been my opinion ever since I first heard each song. In the context of the bossfight itself, Necrofantasia is probably better? But as a song and experience, Necro-fantasy wins out by a landslide. The ZUNpets are too good! While I like Necrofantasia's bridge section with the piano and drums, the epic amazing awesome chorus is honestly my least favorite part; it just feels loud for the sake out loud. If we include the CD versions, then Necro-Fantasy is in my top 5 favorite 2hu songs ever. Magical Astronomy's Necrofantasia is just "cool, I guess." After the new intro played, I was kinda disappointed that it just went into normal Necrofantasia.

A good way to sum the two up is "Necro-Fantasy is like being swept away by a million waves, and Necrofantasia is like getting hit by a train."

Oh, and if I can say another hot take:
Bad Apple is upper-mid tier in its game of origin, let alone PC98, let alone all of Touhou. It's catchy, but that's about all it's got going for it.

my apologies for this but a post containing many words incoming (this post is apparently about 1200 words, almost the same length as the second essay I wrote this semester, pls forgive):
ok I have nothing better to do but I realize these are all pretty absurdly long posts so I will rewrite my two posts in here into like
non-treash readable humanspeak type english
that could possibly raise the word count significantly so forgive me lord for what I'm about to do

you're basically in the middle of the "big lore" of the series
almost all of the artbooks and the first line of fighting games were released around MoF/2007
a good amount of the touhou stuff released after 2012 doesn't need to be thoroughly read/analyzed because it's mostly games or slice of life manga
out of the post-2012 manga, I'd argue only FS is of much relevance outside of "general happenings in gensokyo" 
WaHH has a little bit of important stuff but you can pretty much just sit down and read it all at once and you'll know more than enough about it
for the games, only ULiL->LoLK and WBaWC->17.5 are of note because there aren't artbooks or significant manga appearances that rely on game knowledge anymore
I went through all the manga before with surface-level knowledge of DDC-WBaWC and their casts (excluding LoLK which I found interesting) and easily understood all the events (most of which didn't appear of importance anyway)

a few games don't seem to be very easy to understand
like 17.5 or WBaWC, which many people seem not to get until reading a summary of the plot 
there's also characters like okina which are confusing in both origins and intentions
she's a "secret god" usually said to be "based on matarajin" but she also loudly announces her presence and says she wants to "make herself known" by causing probably at least four or five incidents by now (many of which are annoyingly unclear in intentions) and real-life mythology decides that she is actually based on 12345432199999 gods and apparently has some relation to tengu
this isn't SUPER common but it'll happen enough to be noteworthy
and I've seen enough "why did (2hu) do (thing)" and "what did (2hu) want" to know it aint how it used to be

past 2012, there's honestly not a ton of "lore" left 
ZUN doesn't really make artbooks anymore and those were the main source of information that probably led to early windows touhou's lasting popularity and fanbase, not to mention
well
depth and content
only ZUN artbook past 2012 that matters is AFiEU (grimoire of usami is just grimoire of marisa 2)
and it's a pretty clear parody of modern politics and society including but not limited to boundary conspiracies, the miko trump speech, deceitful advertisements, and anti-kakashi newspaper commentary
ZUN straight up says he went around reading tabloids and watching crusty skewed news to be able to write it properly
and the humor in the book is damn good 
it's not great for actual information though as most of the artbook is highly and purposely biased (this artbook is actually what people like to say PMiSS is like)
but I suppose it works as a slice of lifey thing 
the japes alone redeem this one for me but we haven't had a proper encyclopedia-type in 9 years (I'm afraid it's been... nine years. or, alternatively: (9))

manga is the new artbook, as ZUN's finished three and started up two since 2012
definitely doesn't achieve as much as the artbooks did though
it shows the characters in a far more natural setting than interviews or literal encyclopedia entries but if a character's not
a. a fairy or fairy-like youkai
b. stage 4 or higher boss
or c. relevant to a group including a stage 4 or higher boss
they probably won't show up for more than like one chapter (or one panel)
I guess that's to be expected but eh it's not satisfying either
the manga mainly focuses on marisa/raymoo (sometimes) and kasen/fairies/suzers/aya/mamizou depending on which manga you're reading
aya/mamizou also show up again in lotus eaters so you better REALLY like them or there is no escape (I don't much enjoy them anymore)
the manga tends to be slice of life with almost nothing of real relevance happening which gets really repetitive to read 150 chapters in unless you're a person like me who watches endless eight and then, next haruhi rewatch, watches endless eight again
I found solace in seeing one panel of my favorite characters during the party scenes (not even a jape)

the "true" replacement for artbooks is strange creators of outer world I think
I vaguely recall ZUN saying something along the lines of "I think it's better to release a magazine than to write long books" though I have no source for this and no will to confirm it
so if this statement doesn't ring a bell ignore it
strange creators of outer world has some stuff about gensokyo's layout and interviews (the interviews are actually good) along with character profiles, which ZUN doesn't actually write and only approves
if you read through the bios you'll see they're pretty much all old information, just compiled from older touhou works and ZUN's txts
this includes the akyuu books which are said to be unreliable, which causes a problem
the profiles in SCoOW are written from an objective point of view (not akyuu's or anyone else in-universe) but they contain information considered dubious by fans
I believe the yukarin profile in PMiSS is one of the main reasons the work is considered unreliable (based on the short ZUN doujin with akyuu and yukarin) but the SCoOW profile takes that information at face value (and it was approved by ZUN)
so what now? strange creators of outer world is supposed to be canon and accurate, being approved by ZUN, but it contains information fans consider faulty
what I'm trying to say here is that SCoOW doesn't bring anything new to the table while also causing a few issues like this one, so it's pretty ehhhhhhhhh
I'd just stick with the interviews, myself

basically, don't feel intimidated with the newer stuff
there really isn't a whole lot of important material left
I went through all of the manga that ended past 2012 and the two artbooks in three days because it's all pretty light and there's not a lot that needs to be remembered
I do not mean to say modern 2hus isn't worth going through or it's major ass or anything
but I'm guessing the lack of material to go on for a lot of characters is why the games past TD have like five fanworks total and anyone who isn't stage 5 or 6 is 80th in the popularity poll
I liked it well enough but I probably wouldn't want to go through much of it again (other than AFiEU and fairies)
come join me in having read everything (other than cola because I forgot about cola) and gaining very little from this feat
I feel I've already written at least three other posts that are the same damn thing as this but eh the words are on the page so there's no going back

I quite liked how early windows had a pretty good consistent theme to it
EoSD felt very eastern "western" and PCB felt wintery but calm and IN was a very "middle of the night" type game
not good at describing it but each game had a strong environment to it that I could choose when I was feeling that sort of game which is cool

perhaps she is uninteresting now because she went from "rock maid" to "elegant maid", the change of both theme (music) and theme (character) as you said
I don't find flowering night interesting or even particularly pleasant 
so it replacing luna dial honestly sucks
the "elegant and highly capable" trope also gets dull fast and I've seen it enough times to only fondly remember one parody (sakuya is mostly played straight so there's not much humor there either)
in EoSD when sakuya felt like a straight up dio joke I enjoyed her quite a bit
but after that she just feels like sakuya
it's a dumb thing for me to care about but that's a pretty big loss and just another reason for me to not really care for her


I listened to all four necro whatevers again to ensure my opinion
but I didn't find myself caring for any of them
CD>game but only because the game versions were actually pretty unpleasant
earlier I said I enjoyed both songs equally and believed the CD versions fixed most of the issues of the game versions but I hadn't listened to them in a while
this time I just didn't care 

basically just stared at the screen, eyes glazed over, waiting for the inevitable fall of man, triumph of demons, and eventual heat death of the universe to free me from my mortal flesh cage chaining me down to the ground on which I sat experiencing the buzzing of an old tune in my ear (more heat later keep reading)
I don't know what was with this reaction but that's my current opinion on the songs now
two years ago magical astronomy necrofantasia was like crack and I could almost feel the wonders of borders and exploration of the unknown
and silly ol spongebob was thinking early windows was "eh pretty good I guess"
perhaps annoyed at the prevalence of the settings and characters in fanon and not realizing that canon, at least, was redeemable 
now in year 2019+2 early windows is heroin and necro whatevers are the same as radio static or tetris A
guess I'll go back to my dolls in pseudo paradise again

original bad apple is pretty good (mildly noteworthy 7.5 or 8/10) but alstroemeria's version is easily the worst song in any of their albums it's showed up in
not justin beaver baby tier bad (if I want baby I listen to mass destruction) but compared to everything else it's pathetic
every time I listened to an alstroemerica album and bad apple played I thought "well what am I supposed to do with this???"
it's a straight downgrade but they put it in like 10 damn albums due to its success so you can't escape it
only the animation and its parodies are good (though I suppose the parodies are enough to make up for how "eh" the song is)
doesn't matter that bad apple! is "the touhou song" that blew up in popularity and introduced so many people to the series
DONARUDO and chillno's math class (doesn't sound good but funey so it's up there) are better 1v2 me (it is unbalanced because I listed two songs and bad apple! is only one)

this one's gonna get a new super maniax chronicles golden FES royal U update too hold my beer

satorimanga's happening right now but man
SA's one of the least relevant early windows games so it's fortunate that ZUN chose it for a manga
but he also gives far more significance to the characters in each setting visited by the "vengeful spirit" than the SA cast
so instead of getting to see the (more relevant part of) SA cast you end up seeing the SDM and its residents then PCB and its two residents plus yukarin and ran and chen then eientei and its residents
in other words it's just the same thing as what ZUN did before, early windows emphasis with even more emphasis on the characters that are relevant to the main plot of those games and nobody else
there's that theory that the manga is gonna end at SA because it's satori's home turf but I hope that stays a theory so we actually get to see something good happen
I don't think satori's even shown up in the story ever since the new illustrator picked the manga up
honestly no clue what ZUN's doing 
the manga also is really damn slow in its progression
seriously, in the amount of time it's taken satorimanga to explain why we should care about the "vengeful spirit" (12 chapters but I'll say ehhh 10? because the chapters started getting very slim before postponement), the SSiB cast would have been one chapter away from flying to the moon in chapter 11
that's like 2/3 of SSiB's story because the second half showed simultaneous events and a long battle scene
and in that time satorimanga's basically just done the same thing however many times and then said "oh yeah b t dubs the vengeful spirit can, like, use a character's powers and stuff so make sure you watch for that"
I'm hoping this slowness results in ZUN making something interesting happen, perhaps including the cast of PoFV instead of not doing that
honestly not sure what to expect from satorimanga, just hoping it breaks the early windows cycle and stops becoming the "only worth it if mima" manga (thanks mimers)

I honestly don't get what people see in the final boss themes from 16-18 (including spinoff)
people would say okki theme is "a culmination of the best parts of final boss themes"

goat spork toutetsu's theme is "amazingly deep and special"
and chima's theme is "beautiful and great"

I listen to them, and all four sound like the same thing
and none of them are noteworthy in any way

strangely enough I think 16-18 have godly stage 6 themes but the boss is always "huh?"
all of them are both particularly good stage 6 themes and great toho themes in general
I don't even know what the hell HSiFS's stage 6 theme is and it's damn good, whatever it is
WBaWC has some strange loud electric instrument thing and a piano which make it also of interest and worth many listens
luna rainbow is very pleasant and calm

this opinion flips entirely when talking about earlier games
every stage 6 theme from 6-14 excluding fires of hokkai, voyage, and miko disco rave is painfully mediocre at best (I don't know if I still have this opinion but I used to think PCB's stage 6 was possibly the worst touhou song overall)
but every stage 6 boss except for whatever remi pathetique and okuu theme is godly
I think voyage and fires of hokkai are some of the best themes in general and miko disco rave is also up there (not nearly as good as those two but far better than the rest 6-14)
the rest of the stage 6 themes 6-14 though
they feel almost like an afterthought with how they are
either the final boss's theme but worse or just some "hey feel pumped up" unmemorable song
it's LoLK when stage 6 themes start to swap godhood with boss themes (also pure furies is probably best final boss theme with high competition from emotional skyscraper and border of life)
strange but stage themes are always nice so good thing those are only getting better

i always just kinda assumed sumireko's timeline went like:
is bored -> makes occult club -> does a lotta mythology research -> does secret sealing club activities by herself since maribel isn't born yet -> happens upon the occult balls -> can use magic now
one thing that makes it really hard to pin down is the whole "abilities" thing. it's pretty clear that a personal ability is distinct from magic that anyone can use, similar to stand or something, but then there are abilities that anybody can use or emulate with technologies (including general magic as a technology). the easiest-to-notice example of this is marisa, whose ability is "using magic", which is clearly a skill. it is so much a skill instead of an ability that a big part of marisa doing marisa things is studying and making her own magic as a human instead of just wave hands it works like some other dudes can do. an example of an ability that can be replicated would be renko's, the ability to "tell what time it is by the stars and where she is by the moon". especially by renko's time period, that's the kind of stuff machines can do for you. taking into account that stars and the moon are highly magically charged concepts, and i would assume you could set something up to do that with magic as well. and, when an ability can be a learned skill or indistinct from a nonpersonal technologically produced equivalent, does the terminology "ability" necessitate the user to have a supernatural status?
i say no and i say that sumireko's "ability" is acquired instead of natural: unless i am missing something massive.
SO in conclusion sumireko developed esp-like magic similarly to how youkai can just kinda use magic that fits them after they get born. sumireko also is a youkai eventually so i say that checks out
how does renko not know about sumireko? i dont know lol. maybe she was a really bad parent. maybe, the name is a coincidence. same thing with the club. genuinely no idea.
actually maybe she just makes the club again once she goes to college (she moves to kyoto for university (i dont know how she passes high school)). it has been a few years, pretty sure she should have graduated by now.

here's a genuine 2022 remaining gensokyo mystery: what the hell is the hakurei shrine god? lotsa questions to ask, but not a lotta ways to guess at conclusions. other example: maribel. we all know something is up with that, but this time we have info to batter our tongues with. easy one is merry = yukary but you can take that to mean so many things. like she go back in time a long ways and slowly become youkai? does yukari eventually die and need a replacement? and wwwwwwhat even is a boundary huh? you can even go more theorizing and say "ok maybe renko = yukari" or sans is maribel or something something chiyuri, i dunno
ya got conceptual uncertainty, ya got uncertainty about the future, and you can't tell who to trust.

mugenri (len'en gensokyo) is huge everybody knows it nobody cares. hell huge? i dunno but apparently they fit multiple cultures and languages in there. but if youre askin ME there's nothing to talk about there
see our main cast isn't even from the place, they just got teleported in. unlike bored joushikousei-san sumireko though, they were doing stuff beforehand. what kinda stuff? who knows?
sometimes they walk up to some kid youkai just chattin it up and they say "yeah i made a nuke once" (elegantly)
you go further and its like two of these dudes could just use magic on plain ol gods green earth so whats up with that huh. lotsa questions. lotsa waiting for the dude to update the latest game
and basically: that is what touhou used to be doing bam bam bam lil jabs that you can only really guess at the amount of truth they have or what they're gonna lead to. now, not as much
there is still this sort of uncertainty, and i really think there is a lot of stuff to me asked and answered but probably what is holding the lads back is the spawn point of the hakurei shrine
right i mention those places far away like hell and makai and whatever not because of the large amount of space but because it is foreign. reimu & co have a comfort zone, and their comfort zone basically covers anywhere you can reasonably reach in six stages if you start at the shrine/forest of magic. nothing is gonna push them to ask questions or to bring up uncertainties since they're too good at their job to need to think about it. reimu was always busted but she did used to take it a bit more seriously. you look at any integer game since like 13 and she is not foolin around. same thing for marisa, i'd say she kinda seemed like she was putting up bravado in the older games, but nowadays its genuine "i will kick your ass no questions asked" confidence because nobody is gonna be the bigger fish, and nobody is gonna put her in a bigger pond. once again, same for the other playables, in the earlier days, it was more frequent that people had their own reasons to be involved with or hand in whatever incident was topical, but now it's "[remilia/yuyuko/kanako/eirin] told me to get involved" because it's essentially just giving them a day off their usual work and a chance to socialize. if they were gonna be serious about it, they would help somehow or go with them (imperishable night)

gensokyo is at peace; a fantastic peace where magicians are free to study, elegant battles are free to be fought, and each person is free to pursue their own ambitions. the downtrodden can revolt, and humans can become strong. i can suppose that such is the peace the spellcard rules were meant to create.
it is as incredible as those living in it choose it to be, and for as long as we follow the lazy shrine maiden of paradise, we will follow her lifestyle.
that is why i now follow tsubakura enraku who makes nukes

FINAL POINT on this bit, final point
this kinda mystery matters tenfold for touhou because of how much fanwork is being made constantly, always shifting with what changes in the games. it would be really, really difficult to make something like concealed the conclusion nowadays because of how much more articulated gensokyo as a place is, but that's just how things change over time. there is still space for big things to change, but it's in different places. after mountain of faith, the way people understood a lot about touhou changed (extrapolation, i was not there to see it)
but i was there to see it happen to undertale. same kinda deal.
undertale? uncertainties up the ass. you can take so many things to go so many ways and still have papyrus' missing asterisk for dessert.

[FIGHTING GAMES], bit of a different story there. you get a lot more perspectives, as well as different spawnpoints. ulil still my fave xoxo call me back story-wise since there are allllll kinds of reasons for battling and its not just all about sumireko (i like the parts where it is the most though) and i think if each of the inter games had as much variety in reoccuring cast and as much differing in storyline we would be at a much more <i>enigmatic</i> point right now.

[OKINA], i literally don't even know. she's some dude who is simply hanging out and that's fine by me. some people have said "yukari 2" but she had a whole thing where she was introducing herself fresh start no past no chains while yukari is all about that kind of stuff. she also solves problems on purpose instead of causing them, even giving a job offer to cirno. how much more charitable can you get?

WBaWC has some strange loud electric instrument thing

pretty sure it's a rhodes piano and it's great, but recreating the sound is hard and recreating synths is even worse.

burst overflow does lose the funny trumpet but I like it as one of the more creative remakes from bpohc.
I remember the first area from luna nights had a good mix of luna dial, but haven't played since the update that added Marisa, should probably finish it sometime, even if I spoiled myself on the extra stage's theme.

as said before I don't think things will turn bad for Touhou, just that maybe the protagonist perspective might be turning a bit dry after 25 years, but 17.5 threw the spotlight around, hopefully there'll be more like that. For Len'en one of the things I find appealing is that it recaptures some of the mystique Touhou has when you're new.

SumiReko (formerly, sumikenko) can't have magic because she can't use it. its okay that you forgot that she is a Wooden Youkai since they don't talk about it much and most of the time i dont talk about it either, but since she's made of wood (and stones) she cant use magic. you said that shes a wood youkai, but you forgot that makes her invincible to magic. when she uses magic, she goes into a sort of trance that makes her able to float like Okina (god the of the disabled). Okina can't reflect SumiReko's magic because it's impossible to reflect. you tried really hard to get the the the sentences to make sense but i think you needed to play touhou a fewwwww more times. Sumireko, Okina, and Renko ALL have similar abilities, but sumireko is the ONLY one who can use magic.

uncertainty?:
you said that for every ten thousand minecraft worlds, one of them would have a mystery. this reminds me of how Charlie would purchase almost ten thousand willy wonka bars before he finds the golden ticket, like finding a mystery in my minecraft world. las vegas. I think you're overthinking the mysteries in this situation, there are lots of mysteries in gensokyo, most of them I've solved but I'm waiting for the right opportunity to tell you. I don't think my computer could handle ten THOUSAND minecaft worlds, let alone one mystery, AND ten thousand fish.

My answer: no, they don't look the same. in the undertale graphic novels, kris doesn't use soul power like frisk. even in the undertale CDs and extra videos, kris doesn't look like me. frisk can use the soul to heal papyrus. he uses mushrooms to level up, only the green ones, but the red ones are used for life power. i guess everyone knows that, but it just seemed relevant to me.

I only have like 5 interest in anything sumireko shows up in so I honestly have no idea the most I ever did was look at the wiki and think "man what"
honestly I don't know how the whole ability thing works in the first place because "everyone is supposed to have an ability" but then there are times when it just doesn't really make sense why or someone appears not to have one and they have to work for it

2hu has usually been good about giving enough information to do things with but not enough to know everything 100% though it doesn't really seem to "work" anymore

two damn characters are always better regardless of series
in 2hu mainline you get to use in most cases 2-4 characters (only one at a time) and pretty much never get to play as anyone other than the protagonists with the exceptions being fighting games and PoFV
and that sucks
sure I can still choose sanny but that won't make up for a game with a big but not too big cast of characters (monster collecting games have too many, the genre is fine but in this example they aint cutting it) where you can learn about all of them and use whoever you want even if it turns out every character you like sucks because that's just how things go
routes also nice especially when you can choose from the beginning and they actually change more than like two lines of dialogue though god forbid there's like 20 of them and you need to play all of them to know what happened

picking your element at the beginning of the game is an important choice and I usually went for metal because I liked the exclusive boss (yuyuko) more, but fighting okina after the heart-wrenching wooden-mage cutscene is quite the experience too

with the current risks, I don't think I could accept the offer. I change my mind. in the worst case scenario, the fish have crushed us, and everything will smell awful when it inevitably rots in a few days without proper refrigeration and sanitation. 
if the fish are alive we can pick a critically endangered species like the pondicherry shark to create ten thousand of (though this may cause other issues, it is preferable to ten thousand pounds of rotting flesh)
ten thousand chocolate bars is much less of a risk, though. you can get ten thousand ritter sport bars and sell them for a good price. they would last for years and in the event that they crush your room, you can sell them for $3 each and make $30000 excluding the effort going into selling them, likely enough to improve the room drastically.

i actually am not a big fan of fighting games in general and i would usually much prefer any kinda top down or side scrolling or third person shooter to it especially given that we would be able to use the powers of the crazy flying girls more freely BUT i do very much also like being able to multiplayer in so many ways on official games. 17.5 unfortunately does not grant the freedom i would want out of a nonfighting game due to the controls but also doesn't have multiplayer. still a very cool game but it wont replace the floor

about multiple characters:
it has yet to be formally announced or released in any capacity but i am working on a danmakugame with a pal that has a key feature of multiple characters with different routes and encourages playing all of them with their funny gimmicks. i HOPE you will like it when a demo comes out in february probably

sponge i will NOT be playing the wood route, i picked water once and that's the only route you can meet "blue kogasa" due to her dying offscreen any other route as you know. she is my favorite touhou character and i will not be able to cope with knowing she is dead for the whole game

yukari weirds the boundary between night and day and/or sakuya extends the night because the moon is funky and they want time to figure out what's going on with it. the moon is funked because eirin is doing a large-scale magic that will seperate the earth and the moon (presumably forever) so they can't come down and take sakuya. this is bad for various obvious reasons, although none of them immediately affect anyone other than yukari (likes to troll the moon) and remilia (is going to go on vacation shortly (to the moon))
the funked moon combined with yukari/sakuya's meddling is also making youkai hang out a lot more than they normally would, so bad for humans
