Now that you mention it Yuugi seems to be a good fit for a fighting game for similar reasons to Moukou actually. Surprised neither have ever appeared.

Hi everyone, it's my first post here. Nice to meet you! Here's this wall of text as thanks.

This is not in any particular order. Pretty much everything here is conjecture based on limited appearances. I'm doing all of Touhou in (more or less) release order, and have only gotten up to PoFV.

Youmu is probably my favorite. She's a being of contrast, of two halves combined. A dead human. A fast physical attacker and a floating blob. A master swordsman and an overworked gardener. A total badass worthy of her own THX intro, and a total dorkass who takes danmaku way too seriously. Her skills are sharp, yet her wit is blunt.
In PCB, there were a few funny moments of dialogue, and the Spellcards bring nice indirect characterization as always. But her scenario in IaMP is what really got me to like her, because it gave us a very pointed demonstration of her personality. In pretty much every fight, she goes "You might be responsible for this incident. I'm gonna slash you to find out." Then she immediately slashes their faces and leaves them in the dust to find the next suspect. That is how lotsa earlygame 2hu dialogue goes, but Youmu does it to everyone, not just the early fights. Not only that, but she cuts straight to the point, right through all the attempts at banter.
This personality is especially in contrast to Yuyuko, who acts incredibly silly while being one of the more wise & savvy characters. Youmu's partnership with & devotion to Yuyuko makes for some great banter.

Touhou is the absolute queen of 700 Year Old Little Girls Done Right, and Remilia is a great example of that. The Scarlet Devil, a menacing, 500-year-old vampire with her own castle, immense power, and the ability to control fate... is a selfish, pretentious, annoying little girl who really wants to be Dracula.
I'm exaggerating here. There's hints of a genuinely mature side to her. And even when she's being a total brat, reading her dialogue is so fun.

I don't really get why people like Sakuya so much. She's got so many cool things about her. Stopping time, throwing knives, being Remilia's main maid. But all I've gotten from her personality is the "perfect and elegant maid" thing, and her mysterious background isn't enough to make me care.
She has some fun moments, particularly when her perfect and elegant maidness backfires. But that's just a couple moments. Also, I'm not a big fan of meido stuff. Maybe I'll warm up to her.

Mokou deserves an essay but I don't feel like writing one so tl;dr she has way more to her than "angsty immortal." Her laidback attitude when we see her, despite her tragic past & future. Her grudge against Kaguya, which is more like an anchor than true hatred. Not to mention her awesome design and abilities.

Kaguya's just as interesting as Mokou, but for way different reasons. Sheltered yet friendly, manipulates eternity, and frickin beautiful.

Also Reimu and Marisa are kinda givens. I like Marisa more, but really wanna see more of Reimu. She seems almost like the opposite of a stereotypical "main character."

I haven't tried using her yet but it'd probably be pretty interesting

I always thought sakuya is just a dio joke or reference or heavily influenced character
not because of that whole "is that a jojo reference" but because she straight up is a time-stopping knife-throwing character with a spellcard called "the world" and a dio-colored alternate skin in soku (also within vampire mansion)
usually the "cool maid" type is like that I think it was better when she had
"You can't have a maid without hard rock" ZUN year uuh 2002 or 2003

I still didn't actually get to mokou though in the stuff I've seen she is one of the more human feeling characters
she may be immortal and be using a fire flower but compared to the other early windows era characters she doesn't feel like an anime character (well not usually) and I think that is very good

in general I think 9-14 has the best characters though because you got the alternate luigi-type shrine and the religious wars and all that good stuff
it might just be because of overexposure to 6-8 though and also I know only the names and nothing else of maybe 5-6 pc-98 characters
but eh I am not really sure

only thing I am sure about is soku is best game down down x remi and strange combo attacks that do not work half the time

ahhh, my failure to get good at iamp comes back to bite me again, i didn't even know that stuff about youmu. she's more talkative in ten desires and wbawc, but i can't exactly say i've heard all of what she has to say there, either. not for lack of trying, but it's a difficult shot to master.
regardless, youmu is funnily serious and seriously trying to have fun.

for as rich-kid remilia can be, she also does a lot of... well i can't exactly call it community service but she uses her assets in a rather mature way. a patron of the sciences and arts, funding an expidition to the moon and the like. she also can be known for indescriminate hiring of even the most incompetent fairies. even though sakuya basically does everything, those fairies get food and a place to stay.

sakuya is full of ?? ? ??. did you know she's from the outside world? did you know sakuya izayoi isn't her real name? why use silver knives when you work for a vampire? how can you be the daughter of both a joestar and a belmont? is she jack the ripper? some people think she's a lunarian. and if she is a human, will she age normally, too? no way she ages in her stopped time with all the cleaning she does, at least.
well, that's just the mysterious background you mentioned. despite my toho info, i've got not too much to say aside from vaguely remembering her having some pretty interesting talks in ddc. oh yeah, and ssib.

mokou and kaguya, yeah, they're hard to talk about. can't fit 1300 or so years of history in a few paragraphs in a forum post very easily, huh? my first post here kinda just said "is cool" about mokou so props for getting further

don't worry, you'll see more of reimu. especially in forbidden scroller and wahh, she will be around, doing things that technically cannot be considered crimes. i have to say i would go for more marisa. it's pretty much known what most people that have already shown up are doing most of the time. koumakan is chilling, reimu is working, sanae is capitalisming, eientei is doctoring, etc. there are a couple obvious exceptions like yukari, seija, and some others but marisa is a really different case because she is in just about every game, every manga, every everything even when she has no right to be like great fairy wars, but what is she doing between those appearances? who knows, but she isn't lying on her ass like youkai and shrine maidens can afford to. her house is full of stuff, stolen, made, or bought, but she doesn't just steal for show. she's doing some kind of research back there. it doesn't show up in her shot types, that's for sure. perhaps the most intriguing part, because it isn't just for getting stronger, whatever she's doing. only thing that's obvious about her schedule is that she's pretty social with the people in the human village, which is actually kind of a rarity.

i mean there's tenshi with the sword of hisou or whatever but yeah it's pretty much just ornamental compared to the rock tossing. youmu is the start and end of most bladed combat

not sure if i could name a favorite group of appearances but 9-14 is solid, and yeah religious thing tying everything together works neato
pc98 is still really funky since after makai and mugenkan were blocked off they all stopped hanging out. i'm sure yumemi, mayumi, rikako, and rika are all hanging out somewhere doing science things on contract with moriya with the kappa. or maybe, everybody that didnt appear in a cutscene after their fight was killed by reimu and never seen again.

Youmu's probably my favorite from PCB as well, she's one of my go to aces in the Gensou series of games. The half-ghost part is worked nicely, the flower and katana is a cool design, along with her being a gardener yeah she's cool.

I think Sakuya's funnest (of those I've seen) is her Scarlet Weather Rhapsody appearance. But she's appeared in later games and I'm sure someone could point to something fun from those too. But just from EoSD I think I agree with you.

Marisa and Reimu are both fun characters. I always pick Marisa in the games though so I guess she's my preferred between the two.

Eh... I don't think the early windows era characters are that much like anime characters. Their designs are certainly (though who isn't?), but they don't act like stereotypical Capital-A Anime Girls most of the time.

From what fan stuff I've seen, these characters ARE big victims of overuse and simplification in fanworks. Like:
Reimu is either super grumpy 24/7 or super friendly 24/7, Alice is tsundere for Marisa and/or jealous of Reimu, Sakuya wears pads, Flandre is crazy evil, Aya takes pantsu shots, Mokou is emo, Cirno is a cute lovable ⑨, Yukari is whatever the plot wants her to be, Eiki Shiki is tiny and super angry and jealous of Komachi's gigantor boobabazongas, and many more.

Not to say that fanon is total garbo. The characters can be vague and most of it's for jokes, so whatever. You mentioned in this thread that you mainly know fanon & some game dialogue, so the characters probably seem more Anime-ified than they are. Official stuff isn't always super original & complex either.

Yeah Marisa's intriguing too. You see Marisa working hard on special research in her IaMP ending. I'd tell you what she does but you just gotta git gud >:]

The PC98 cast is a gem. It's got Reimu with long pink hair & a traditional miko getup, young Alice, a girl with tanks, Reimu's fiance, proto-Prismriver, the long-lost 3rd Scarlet sister, proto-Sumireko, Yuuka with pants, a dabbing sailor, Marisa with short red hair, Sakuya with swords, Meme-a, and ROCKS.

Yeah, Sakuya's fine. It's probably overexposure. I've seen her a lot, but in most of those cases she was mainly used for her cool abilities, or a dumb meme. It's given me the impression that people like her more for what she is that who she is, if that makes sense.

Yeah it makes sense, I think there's truth to what you say. Not sure how she is in later print works and games but in the beginning it was probably due to having a lot of cool abilities, etc.

My favorite appearance of hers is in a fan game where her personality has more time to be fleshed out in a longer narrative and throughout her different attacks, abilities, etc.

especially old doujins can have a lot of that, yeah. the biggest crime is that eiki is actually rather tall

don't even worry about reimu she's doing great. but you should see the other guy. since carpet is around maybe theyll chime in about reimu and their favorite character according to their profile
ahhh one day i'll beat iamp and ten desires. there are some really nice stages in both of them that don't show up in the rest of their trilogies but i guess there's even more i'm missing out on until i crack open training mode for however long it takes to get used to it

i gotta git gud for pc98 too though huh. i am aquainted with most of everybody there but i am also not highly responsive to the massive gameplay difference of 1 and 2. barely getting out my soew 1cc and now i need to do it on all shot types to see rika again? crying. very glad the games quickly got nicer and i could hang out with mima and friends

I've been a fan of Touhou Project for around 13 Years now.
in Spring of 2008, my interest in watching Crazy Super Mario 64 Speedruns would lead me to a Speedrun / MAD Mashup where Marisa Stole the Precious Thing (Long Version) was synced to fit a Super Mario 64 Speedrun.
I looked up the Song and that's where my Rabbit Hole Starts in terms of getting into the Famdon and becoming increasingly more fascinated and addicted to the Wonderful World of Touhou.
But these are things I can go into deeper detail in with other threads.

I've had many, many favorite Touhou Characters over the years.
Though I haven't always been super invested in Touhou Project.
I have two phases.
Touhou Classic Phase would be my enjoyment of the the Franchise from 2008-2011.
And then Touhou Rebirth Phase would be my interest in the Series from 2018-Present.
Some of my most beloved Characters were Cirno, Flandre, Nitori, Marisa, Patchouli, Reimu, Suwako, Satori, Keine and I'm sure a handful of others.

Once Touhou 12 Came out.
Murasa Minamitsu remained a very beloved Character of mine for many years afterwards.
Still being deeply fond of her years after My interest in Touhou had died out.
A Young Friend of mine Gave me a little Anchor Trinket in probably 2009 or 2010 because they knew how much I loved Murasa.
And I still have that Trinket to this very day, though it really doesn't hold the symbolic value to me that it once did.

I Loved The shit out of Murasa-Chan~
I Love her Stage, The Stage Music, Her Boss Music, The Unique Lore behind her Character in relevance to Byakuren and the rest of the crew that joins her on The Palanquin.
I Loved the Unique Lore and Mythology surrounding the Ghostly Legend that she's based off of.
And lastly I just found it super neat that she hurls her Anchor at you in her Attacks.
Also the fact that Zun accidentally left a Windows Sound Effect in the Audio for her stage Theme

Today I'd say my Absolute favorite Touhou Character spot remains firmly centered on the Lovely, The timeless Reimu Hakurei!!!
Kind of Generic, I know.
But I think being invested in Touhou for 13 years is a pretty Valid Excuse for liking the Center Main Character of the Entire series.
I developed a deep fondness for the Shrine Maiden Look and those cute exposed pits because of Reimu.
And she's been my main Played Character all these years even as over a Dozen different characters have been playable main Characters throughout the Series history.

Why do I love Reimu so much, I really can't say for sure.
As I'd say there are characters that I can easily find more appealing in a variety of ways besides Reimu.
But if you asked me why I love Reimu so much.
I think all I need to say is.
"Bitch, She Cute!"

We got into Touhou around similar times. I think I was a year or so later than you though. Hard to remember just how different the internet was back in 2008, very different times haha

I think when I first got into Touhou my favorites shifted around quite frequently, but after a few years they became a bit more entrenched and static. The last addition being Kasen when I started reading the mangas.

Murasa's got a cool design I think, and she's a fun character to use in the Gensou game. There's something about seeing her swinging a giant anchor and bludgeoning others.

Reimu is one of the top favorites now doubt, there's a reason for that. She's quite iconic with a distinct design. She's a good character I think.

introduced to touhou by iosys, a classic tale i share myself. you learned about touhou years before i did but times don't change in that regard. hope the recent games have been treatin you as well as the stuff you played back then

while i can't say she's my no. one, murasa is a pretty cool one. first part about her i thought was cool when i first saw her was how she's rockin the sailor uniform. it kinda looks like basically any high school uniform you would find in anime or manga but somehow the way she pulls it off fits in gensokyo and actually looks like a sailor thing instead of making her look like the average joushikousei. probably the hat and the smirk
ichirin is great but it would be cool if murasa showed up to rep touhou 12 in the next fighting game

reimu is a very cool pick and even as a marisa main i respect the choice. she is the de facto protag who is friends with mostly everybody for a reason

Ok no but seriously, I LOVE Chen. I didn't think of her much in the beginning but she grew on me. It helped the fact that I love cats in general and the best way I can describe why I love Chen is, Fucking Kitty. I also love her Boss theme, shame its very short. There's something very cozy about it to me. 

I especially love to see fan works of Chen and Ran being all Mother and Daughter and such which speaking of which. Ran Yakumo, my second favorite behind Chen. She's the one who got me into 2hou in the first place! I am a big fan of kitsune character and well yea. Her theme song is kickass I'll tell you that much and like I said before I just really love seeing fanwork of her and Chen being all Mother and Daughter like.

then you get to ran (well I didn't) and she also spins like hell except now it's nine tails and you feel the full effect of spin 
not that spin where you imagine a ball that's spinning except it's not a ball and it's not spinning and not the other speen
the real, authentic spinning spin of a kitsune who need only to spin
her power originates from her perpetual spinning

also I always found it strange how yakumo yukarin! has a shikigami
and then her shikigami has a shikigami

on the night of the full moon you can summon chen via the chentagram


do not forget to use a yakumo-approved kitsune udon with full tofu to prevent angering the kitsune
