I'll start, Futo, Kasen, and Koishi.

Kasen for the obvious


Koishi because she beat Reimu and Reimu fans never recovered. Jokes aside, cool character that has had a great role in many fan projects. From adventures that amount to just stealing food, to being an interesting and long arc in Fantasy Maiden Wars.

well uuh I basically only know fanon and some game dialogue from the wiki translations
I read up to the latest chapter of the cheating detective satori but I didn't really find it to be very entertaining and none of the characters that appeared interested me much either

I like kogasa because heterochromia and also that type of youkai reminds me of the cheesy horror stories where someone throws out a doll and then it comes back and kills them lol
I haven't really seen her in many doujins out there other than the one 4koma series where the guy draws himself as kogasa

hecatia has a weird shirt so I can't help but like that
though I basically just know she has three bodies and I did not read any dialogue from her and the only time I saw her in doujins was just jokes about the weird fashion sense

I didn't play ten desires but I saw yoshika in a bunch of doujins and the content and jokes are always good so I enjoy whenever she shows up

I've played and seen the most of 6-8 though I don't particularly care for most of the characters in those
I don't dislike them either but it's kinda like rice and bread where it's easily available and there's a lot of it but I wouldn't think of them when asked what my favorite food is
meiling/youmu fighting other characters in non-danmaku combat is always a joy to see though

maribel and renko as a duo would be my favorite and there's a lot of stuff about them because they're the main characters of the music CDs
they aren't part of gensokyo and kinda like a storyline aside the main one but I think they're interesting and they also have just the right amount of popularity to have many fanworks but not be everywhere and almost unavoidable like EoSD

Incidentally, that VS3025 who ran the wikia podcast was also a big Kogasa fan haha
Outside of the main series I can only think of her as appearing in the last Fantasy Maiden Wars Game. Fun character, taunt special skill is very useful.

Really out of the loop, forgot about Hecatia haha. It's a neat design

Ten Desires was actually the last main entry that I really got into and played a lot. Yoshika is a rare favorite, fun gimmick in the game though, being a sort of human shield and all haha.

From 6-8 I think Remi is fun. Always good for comedic relief but also able to be a serious character when needed. Youmu is a fun character too, I like the sword gimmick.

Yeah Maribel and Renko are neat characters I think, a fun little addition in a creative way.

yeah I saw kogasa was pretty high up there in the popularity poll, like in the top 30, and yet I hardly ever see her in fanworks or official works
maybe I just somehow missed all the ones she is in? I dunno

hecatia's design is so cheesy and strange I enjoy it very much
ZUN says she's apparently more powerful than anyone in gensokyo so that's a plus lol
reminds me of a cetain enigmatic man in a psychedelic hawaiian shirt
if you're ever gonna make a story don't forget to slap an angry birds t-shirt and cargo shorts onto the most powerful character

poor yoshika is a shield for seiga genesis but it's all worth it for the funny
we got stuff like yoshika in the USA and necromantic
yoshika at the car wash
may not have the most stuff out there but is peak touhou
cream of the crop yoshika's arm falls off and she puts it back on

remilia fills a niche of being small like cirno but also being 500 year old powerful vampire and there is a lot of potential lol
in most fanworks I see basically the entire scarlet devil mansion appear as a whole though
I don't have any issues with any of the characters but when they all appear at the same time and very frequently it gets pretty tiring
it's more a flaw with fanworks than remilia herself but it's kinda like wanting one flavor of ice cream and having to buy the entire box to get it
I might just be missing it all entirely though because I don't look for any stuff in particular but instead just read what I find
hopefully there is some good stuff out there that's like that

Hmm, I know Kogasa appeared in 13, she's a mid-stage encounter in one of the first stages. A comedic little episode. Behind on the mangas so I'm not sure if she appears in any of them in any significant role.

Yeah most characters find one cozy role or another in the fandom. Yoshika's had a lot of comedic roles I remember over the years. Shame that character from 13 never really featured in Fantasy Maiden Wars.

Yeah that's a good point, the SDM has more of a presence as a clique than any character does on their own. And as a clique they're quite interesting and fun to have around. Sakuya may not be too interesting on her own, but with her dynamics with the other SDM members, she's a fun character.

In Fantasy Maiden Wars, Remi is one of the final bosses. After that in subsequent games she has about as big of a role as you can make of it. You can use her in battles, in which she has interactions with the enemies or with her comrades, she'll also go off and do other things that has her leave the party sometimes too. Fun games.

There's the Strawberry Boise RPGs as well, which features many characters in their own capacities. The characters of SDM were mostly featured in their own stories for Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, Remilias being the most comedic, and Sakuya's being the most serious.

oh my god i didn't even notice this thread until now. the first bump in lunatic red recent history, i suppose. that's what i get for relying on the "participated" function

it's kinda hard for me to pick just a couple, but:

fujiwara no mokou: super rad and unkillable, favorite extra stage, fun to play in the fighting games, rare "has pants" gensokyo girl, aaaaand dynasty-scans.com/series/the_immortal_who_saw_the_death_of_the_universe

komeiji koishi: for the same reasons as lazulum, and also one day i simply started using koishi as my playermodel in garry's mod, minecraft, etc. and i just think she is funny hanging out around dr. kleiner and endermen. even made some simple koishi sprites in games i've modded before just because playing as her is neat. (good pixelart practice too)

yakumo yukari: the strongest. very purple and unbeatable. i've never seen an ability as interesting and versatile as border manipulation. there's no way you could put a playable yukari in any game with all her tools at her disposal, but even landing a train hit in 12.3 is coolest thing.

kirisame marisa: ultimate human. few others need to work as hard as marisa to be able to go toe-to-toe with youkai, only ones i could think of being hermits and the aforementioned mokou. she may be a volatile thief, but she is the essence of the freedom gensokyo allows for humans.

honourable mentions to sumireko and meiling, my favorite guys to play as in the fighting games. former is the luckiest girl in the world with her dream-cheating and latter has my respect for practicing martial arts when everybody is using magic.

kasen is awesome just for being both an oni, hermit, and mobile zoo. i kind of forget what was going on with her whole arm thing, but she is neat regardless

futo i was once dismissive of as "easy stage 5 boss", but after playing against you in 13.5 i've had to reconsider lol

kogasa is a good hardworking youkai that has caused me too much trouble in ufo, in both stage 2 and extra. dunno why but i think she would be cool as a danmaku protagonist. umbrella could make a cool shot type

hecatia was the first extra stage i played and despite how much it used to crush me it is my second favorite, she has some funky patterns. as for hecatia herself? she is just messing around a lot. i think she was the one who unleashed clownpiece upon gensokyo too

maribel and renko are also my favorites but if i talked for that long this post would be taller than my monitor. they also got a super neat fangame recently in one of the touhou jams which is cool

you're right about the eosd popularity thing. a while ago i was going to make a funny video "eosd but every time i get hit or bomb it switches to another remake of eosd". got 90% of the way through before realizing that my computer couldn't record half of the games in more than 10 fps, so i've shelved that for a while. anyway yeah, there's a lot. just checked, and i had 16 different remakes.

I see a decent amount of controversy about the mokou and kaguya relations in fanworks but I like those ones where they just have some dumb scuffle or compete at video games and whatever lol
and after yuuka got demoted mokou is now best pants
koishi in places she doesn't belong is also very nice lol
it's actually pretty in-character as well koish in sonic '06
honestly I don't know what yukari is canonically like but hardbass theme in 15.5 as well as tons of possibilities with gaps (and yukarin fantasia lol) and the many different fanon personalities is entertaining lol
marisa doesn't even get any powers but she can still match up with the rest of the playable characters and even though she is too fast lol she works very hard to be something greater
quite a respectable character I enjoy (except when playing because I cannot move at such a speed)
from the little I've heard it seems sumireko also worked quite hard to get into gensokyo except it also required 2000iq lol

hey, so, I was under the impression that here is where I'm supposed to talk about my favorite character, my favorite touhou character, and my favorite character in general. so, basically, what I'm going to talk about is probably one of my favorite characters, and/or touhou characters, but more importantly my favorite. however, there's some controversy surrounding this character, mostly, mostly from touhou fandoms, in touhou fanworks, touhou music albums, etc., lots of split opinions about this character, mostly, it's my favorite for many reasons, but mostly, it's because of the story and design. I think on touhou forums is where I am talking about my favorite because mostly other places I'm shunned out of society from talking about my favorite character even though, mostly, from touhou, is where my favorite character comes from, even though it's kind of controversial. but anyways.

Ahh Moukou is one of my favorites in Gensou-Taisen actually. Close quarters (animations involve grappling and a lot of punching) and can die multiple times haha. Very high damage so I'll send her charging into enemies or bosses. Also fun to use in that one Strawberry Bose RPG, Genius of Sappheiros I think it was called.

I'll keep that doujin bookmarked, I'll give it a read before too long I hope

Marisa was one of my favorites back in the day actually. I was a much more laid back person so the essence probably resonated with me. She's still a fun character and still the protagonist I always choose in Gensou-Taisen. Always preferred her over Reimu actually haha

Yeah I have to get caught up on the manga. There were a number of stories playing up the mystery of her arm, would like to get some closure on that.

The page is from Symposium of Post-Mysticism. Picked up the book a while ago. There should be translations of it since it's an official ZUN work, would be very surprised if there aren't.

sumireko did work very hard and got very scared and may have gotten some high profile identity disorders in the process but she probably has the best deal out of anybody. friends with strong people, can sell modern world wares to gensokyo and vice versa at a profit, can enter gensokyo whenever she wants, and telekenesis is a pretty rad ability

kogasa deserves the yuuka master spark you are on to something

ahh, that mokou artist. i check their twitter sometimes and they're always making more single-panel comics with her, never gets old

a fellow marisa main, i see. i always play marisa if it's an option, but sometimes in the danmaku games if it's really tough i retreat to reimu

the manga featuring kasen has already finished, so no worries about being left behind with what's going on. catching up with all the touhou manga would be a bit more difficult, i check out lotus eaters and cheating detective satori consistently, but there's also one or maybe even two? of the fairy trio manga still being made

just read the symposium of post-mysticism futo bit. didn't even really know how shikaisen worked until now, neat. guess that's why she uses so many plates in her attacks.

I don't think I've ever played a game as Reimu actually

Ahh, Ibara Kasen finished already? 時間が経つのを忘れてしまった...
Ended with 10 it seems, nice round number to end it on. Touhou seems to be a lot more timely with its releases, been following Break Blade and they only release a volume a year and a half if they're quick. Still, I remember buying Ibara Kasen volume 5 when it just came out, had this promotion where you got a free Ibara Kasen folder, was quite neat and not for sale by any other means.

Yeah the Shikaisen bit is neat. The selection of a plate is humble and fits well with Japanese 美学 I think. I can connect with wabi-sabi having practiced Sadou myself. What more human than a humble plate in a sense, with all its little variations that lend it a unique sense of beauty.

Futo's anachronism is relatable, I may be a zoomer but perhaps not in spirit. I also particularly like how she goes around eagerly trying to help people with it being received as the opposite haha
I've been able to help people now, but I experienced failure when I was younger. Was too naive, inexperienced, and my heart was too young, there was a tragically blighted girl I failed to help; very eye opening experience. You have to be none of those and more to be able to help.

Been a very exhausting few weeks, a lot of things taking up my immediate attention and memory

Marisa is indeed quite a cool character. She's the "ordinary magician", no special trait but somehow manages to pull through in predicaments.
Speed and firepower, has that Hakuro and fires lasers from it. It's unfortunately difficult to incorporate into games though. I know I go on about it too much but Gensou-Taisen does it well, she has one of the fastest un-focused speeds and very high firepower. However she lacks the combat proficiency of Reimu who is good at grazing, counter attacking, variable combat proficiency across ranges, etc.

Yeah there's the umbrella squad now that you mention it haha
Kogasa/Yukari/Yuuka
A lot of girls in Japan carry around umbrellas actually especially in the summer, it's to protect their skin from the sun. Probably why they have it in Touhou, except Kogasa who is the umbrella.

I don't know anything about Hecatia, but from your description, she is the boomer of Touhou haha

I started out really liking Youmu. I guess the idea of a half-ghost was pretty cool, as was a frilly girl with katana. She's still one of my top characters, though not the best. At some point she got knocked off the top spot by Suika and Yuugi. Love me the onis and their carefree attitudes (I've even got a Suika figurine). Helps that Yuugi has some great themes.

Ahh Youmu I still like quite a lot. Always made a lot of use with her in Gensou, great for sending out alone and attracting a lot of enemies. Could hold her own well, and the bladework while blocking attack and getting personal was a lot of fun watching. Played as her a lot in the Ten Desires too.

Laid back characters are fun, Reimu kind of has that going for her too eh. There was a chapter in Ibara Kasen where Kasen is enraged by how laid back Reimu is so she forces her into discipline training, can't remember the outcome though been too long.

Yuugi's theme is pretty good, liked hearing the remix they had for her in Gensou

youmu was my favorite too at the start. i got this cool decal ft. her i slapped on my computer a long time ago and she has been there since. i always try my best with her shot types but it doesn't usually work out

oni are cool, wish they showed up in the fighting games a bit more. kasen is in the most recent ones but with how little melee she has and how hard she tries to hide it, she doesn't play very oni-like
