How long have you been into Touhou and how did you first get into it?

I got into it with the ol ronald mcdonald as well as people playing night of nights with random objects or a telephone or calculator and such
and then I ended up seeing those ronald mcdonald touhou mods like embodiment of scarlet hair lol
and that made me want to play the games
I've known about it since like 5th grade and at random times I would look for more ronald mcdonald stuff or watch all the iosys videos and play EoSD, and then a few years later I listened to more of the music and eventually I decided to actually take a look at canon works a little and try out more games than just EoSD
I still haven't actually read or seen a lot of official works (mostly read doujins and listened to music) but I can at least recognize half the characters in bad apple now lol

i think i might have said this in another thread but:
was playing osu for a while, really liked some iosys maps, knew that they had something to do with weird bullet hell games called "touhou", searched it up, downloaded the most recent game (lolk), and it just kinda went from there. at first i was just banging the games out as fast as i could, but eventually i detoured to the doujins and music. i couldn't say how many times i was playing at first and was like "bro i've heard this song dozens of times before it's from this series???". once i played a fire emblem romhack, was pretty cool, got pretty far, and then i played touhou 12, come back to the fire emblem mod and nothing's the same anymore because i've realized the title music is heian alien

i've read aaaaalmost everything and beaten aaaaaaalmost all the games, but there's still a good amount of stuff i'm missing. i think the only games i haven't beaten are 1, 2, 7.5, 10.5, and 13.5. that kinda sounds like a lot but there are still so many others. if you guys wanna play some of the fighting games multiplayer so we can get good enough to beat the story modes hmu because i just am hopeless (you know, like the masquerade, ha ha) at some of em
as for the print works, i'll get to the rest eventually. it takes some time to sit down and be like "its cage in lunatic runagate time" but it's always worth it.

you can recognize half the characters in bad apple? bruh i've memorized three quarters of the lyrics (this is the natural consequence of sticking with touhou, undertale, and siivagunner for extended periods of time. i probably have more time on bad apple than i do megalovania, and that's not an easy thing to avoid listening to)

lol yeah many people I've known have at least heard of touhou stuff because of how often it shows up, even in other media
I have no idea how to play fighting games in general because I have only ever played ssbb with my brother all the time when I was 10 and then I played persona 4 arena one time
I am willing to try it out though lol
though it will probably take some time for me to figure out how it works the only online game I ever played was tetris friends
man I remember siivagunner uploading some video saying the channel was over in like 2017 and then I stopped watching and I found out like 6 months later it didn't end at all
also though I am not an expert on bad apple I am proud to say I can recite the mcdonald's slogan, 100% completion while blindfolded in under 4.5 seconds

siivagunner is a constant barrage of japes and tricks, and the channel really was dead, for about two weeks. then, the story things happened and things have been complex since then. stuff has been really nice recently though if you've been keeping up, though

the touhou fighting games are very funny and have near-nonexistent netcode, with the exception of 15.5. luckily hamachi fixes that pretty easily, but port-forwarding is more reliable, albeit more of a pain.
tell me when you get around to playing the fighting games though and we can probably get something working if you're interested

well I remember there being some kinda competition between different characters when I went to look back in 2019 or something
there was phoenix wright and ZUN and reggie+iwata and all that stuff lol
it's pretty funny so I'll probably go check it out again sometime
also do you know any internet guides for doing that fighting game stuff
I thought hamachi was a fish and I googled it and it's the name of a VPN
basically the only things I know are that when laptop don't work none I have to take out the battery and then put it back in and also if I delete system 32 that is not very good
I can get the game to run but past that I am very clueless

That's a cool story, 5th grade for me was Miniclip, 128f, etc., different times heh

I probably own more doujin goods than official Touhou goods at this point so don't sweat it. Between the Touhou Doujin games, music, rail passes (lost both though haha), tote bag (broke), etc.

The music from Touhou gets around the most it seems, funny that even Fire Emblem rom hacks are using music from the series.

I remember 13.5 was a lot of fun, was a Futo main years ago. I'd offer to play but I think trying to connect from Japan wouldn't work, throw in timezones, and my schedule (just took a midterm exam and am exhausted, had a meeting and work too). If you give me a day and time I can try to keep my schedule open though and I'd still be happy to try it out with Hamachi.

You're much more of a series veteran than I am at this point haha

lol one thing I always thought was pretty weird was how those types of niconico videos like ronald mcdonald align pretty well with a lot of today's humor
it feels less like it's covered in irony or whatever but if I showed it to someone they'd not think it was outdated or strange compared to the weird stuff these days
oh yeah, in 5th grade I was always playing flash games and stuff on the DS
good stuff lol, I still remember playing that one duck life game on the school computers

doujin stuff's real cool, especially the music CDs
I remember looking on the wiki at doujin music circle groups and I saw a page for ones that
have been inactive since like 2010 or something and pretty much everything there I'd never even heard of
I tried looking for more information or youtube videos with the songs for random groups and I found basically nothing
though it's a shame that stuff gets lost to time having one of those CDs is like owning a little piece of history

Now that you mention it, a lot of the Nico memes back in the day do align quite nicely with a lot of the irony, post-irony, and zany tone that a lot of memes in the English speaking parts of the internet. Back in those days the English memes were typically zany but non-ironic.

Yeah I have many nice memories with flash games, DS was middle school for me although I could never afford one until high school. My favorite flash games came from Tanaka U, Tonowi, and the one called "Autumn War", those were my favorites.

Yeah one of those things about Touhou is that it has the most amazing doujin scene of anything out there, and there is music of just about any genre for Touhou.

Yeah I remember when Silver Forest disbanded, they were quite popular and one that I liked too. It's not difficult to find a "best of" CD though, should get one some time.

duck life was the shit. it's a shame kongregate is shutting down games in response to flash going offline instead of trying to find a solution like newgrounds. i, too, was rolling with the ds most of my pre-highschool days. ngl 3ds + homebrew is better than switch and i still play the 3ds fire emblem games more than three houses
also by pure chance i also know tanaka u, learned about him when was doing some data sifting through lisa: the painful and it turns out there's just a link to the sniper girl one just in the code (well, as code-like as rpgmaker gets), so i played his stuff and it may not have been super long or deep but it all plays so smoothly, pretty rad

one day irony will loop around fully and the funniest shit will be yo mama jokes. wait, uh-

yooo, akatsuki records. they're one of my favorites. i'm most partial to A-ONE, nothing like some touhou eurobeat (the fact that they make a lot of english tracks helps)

I remember seeing the MLG frogs and the weed on some kid's history presentation and I thought it would never get more intense than that but oh man it absolutely did

are best of CDs usually reprinted? I've heard many CDs don't, but if groups commonly reprint compilation CDs then maybe I can grab a handful if I go to one of them comikets or reitaisais

my sleep schedule is basically able to change whenever because I only have one responsibility right now and it does not matter when I do it
some days I will wake up when the sun goes down and other days when it's high noon
so as long as you guys find a time I'll just go to sleep 10 hours before that

lol did you also level up your duck to 150 in all the stats and then just steamroll the entire game
I always made sure to go into the volcano to get ash colored duck before doing that
I played the other ones a few times but the first was always my favorite

I think it was a few weeks ago that I remembered about the yo mama channel and I went to take a look and there was "pickle thick"
one of my most foul memories
absolutely would not recommend

I saw a lot of those akatsuki records PVs and they are very nice
though half the time I do not know what's happening in them lol
there's stack at least that is very good

also lol this is probably like the 3rd most active english touhou forum at this point
more than two posts a week is a new record

Saturday in the late evening here may work. Macedonian friend of mine has been trying to get me to a pub for a few weeks now. Probably this Saturday, but if I do I'll probably still be available in the late evening. Going to hit up my friend about what time works for him and I'll get back to you.

Ah I remember Kongregate! Played Stalingrad 2 on that, great tower defense. That's really quite cool that there was just a link to Nextframe in the code. Tanaka U is a very talented man who never finished anything though haha. His website was really to service as a portfolio as he freelances as a game dev for a lot of big companies, he also gave some tutorials on how to do flash. Material Sniper was stellar, too bad it'll never be finished.

And I remember New Grounds too, that was big before YouTube was big. Watched a lot of animations and played a lot of flash games on there back in the day.

Even to this day I never really made the investment in a 3ds, really wanted one back in the day, the only reason I even have a Vita was because I got it as a birthday gift which is a story in itself really.

If the memes loop, then it all goes back to the dancing baby before anything else haha

A-One, sounds familiar. Eurobeat's nice. I should pick up some doujin CDs again, been too long. Stopped for a while because I was buying Enka instead for a while. Got Toshiki Kadomatsu, Oginome Youko, etc. Maybe I'll create a thread for doujin music and ask for circle recommendations, don't know where to start anymore.

Yeah definitely, quite a nice feeling. I forgot the pros of forums. I quite like being able to log on when I have some time and type a message then check again in so many hours. Instant messaging is very onerous. I'll look forward to replying to everything later in the morning, can't keep myself awake much longer haha

I think some stores order additional prints of CDs, and it's easy revenue even for a circle that has disbanded. If you go to Comiket or a similar event, you are dealing directly with the circles and what they bring with them.

I'll reply to everything else later, it's about 2 am here after a very, very long day and my vision is starting to fail me, and it's getting hard to think. Really need to get some sleep.

i was a duck life king, played all the games up too 100% completion

mlg was when everything changed, at least as far as i can figure. pre, during, and post-mlg internet are just entirely different places
the yo mama channel though: a bit too far. i can watch a solid 30 seconds of anything on there before i pass out for 72 hours

when i played material sniper recently i actually checked the guy's twitter and: it turns out he's doing a remake, looks to be for phone. pretty neat
and yeah, forums are pretty neat for just talking without pressure. it feels weird to not get back to a discord dm after two minutes but here i can just chill until i think i've actually got something to say

Although I just finished up a contract this week, taught my final classes at a university, so my schedule is a little more open. Hopefully time enough to sleep for now.

I think that warrants a feeling of pride haha. Yeah even Touhou forums in other languages aren't doing so well. We're at about two posts a day at least, uncommon for forums anymore hahaha

Sorry we're still hashing out details. Usually I meet friends in small towns in Chiba these days. Friend has his mind on Tokyo so we're discussing which areas have the fewest cases, seems Chiyoda is a good pick. Waiting on confirmation.
I think 10pm Japan time is a safe bet though, so maybe mark me for then. If it looks like I'll miss it, I'll log on with my phone and post. I'll make it up to you in some way if that's the case.

Those mlg memes were a riot I remember. Those hit indicators from CoD, "Dang son where'd you find this", "get no scoped!", or the 360 no-scopes in increasingly absurd situations. All very funny, but they were a radical departure from the memes that preceded it no doubt.

Wow, a remake of Mat. Sniper for phones? I'll definitely get that when it comes out.
Tonowi did the same thing with Combat Heaven, made it into a mobile game. The trial for it is one of the best mobile games out there in my humble opinion.

Yeah I know exactly what you mean. There's often that feeling when you don't want to respond immediately, but you don't want to give the impression that you're ignoring someone, for example. Very relaxing and very convenient. Posting now in a window of time, maybe I'll check on trains when I use them more-- when things return to normal more than they have at present

yeah being able to wait before replying is definitely one of the things that makes forums special
in them discords and skypes and such if you don't reply in like two hours or less then it feels like very bad mistake has been made
also timezones work well here because waking up or staying up until 03:30 is not necessary lol
