New to LR and new to Touhou (Read 561 times)

Hello everyone on LR! I am Colticide (or Colt if you prefer) and as the title says I am actually new to Touhou. I've discovered it last month and gotta say I've never seen such a fanbase for a Indie title ever, and thats awesome. Well where to begin, this video (Smooth McGroove, youtube) started it all for me, the music of touhou had done something to my soul and I was taken in by the amazing soundtrack of the games. Interestingly enough Both ZUN and Nobuo Uematsu are my favorite musicians and as a bonus they are both self taught, which can explain why both have tunes you can hum too.

Anyway, the next thing I found out was the gameplay, and I lost it when I saw lunatic mode. Difficult gameplay is something I've longed for and it shows in the many many hours I put into Dark Souls, Both games are beautiful in their own way and it's very possible to beat them both you have the tools right in front of you. And finally the characters, I can't tell you how many of the characters I've come to like. But I'll admit that the first one that interested me was Flandre, I don't mean any offense when I say this but a mentally unstable vampire with the power to destroy anything and everything is pretty interesting; and everything else is what's I've been doing for the month just tons of Touhou videos and music, I've even started to post track of the days on my facebook account to get people to see why I'm crazy about the music.

Whew this is quite long and I apologize, now onto a bit about myself and questions I have regarding this forum. (geez haven't typed this much in years)Well firstly I'm a old school gamer, I grew up on video games and aim to make it something I do for a living, what is it? Heck if I know but it'll work out eventually. I keep track of a lot on what's going on in the current gaming scene like new releases, news, and sales as well. As such I do have a youtube channel but nothing is on there because of issues but I would like to a lot of creative Touhou topics and possibly You guys with more experience with Touhou could lend me your knowledge. I also haven't been on a forum is years, for real, like 2009. So again I'm sorry if I have any kind of spelling errors or mistakenly added a topic in the wrong thread. (like now, it says thread but I thought you make a new topic inside that thread, or do I have that backwards...)

Now onto questions, how active is the LR forum? Does the forum have any regular events that happen? Do you have users that make avatars and signatures on a regular basis? (I've made mine myself but I'd still like to keep learning on how to improve) and for me the most important is it alright to ask about Touhou fan games on where to buy them in the forum? I don't support piracy and believe in supporting the developers but its hard to find information on where to buy them or if some are even free, I've looked for hours. 

Wow if anyone has read all of that thank you so much, I've been pretty reluctant on joining a forum for Touhou since I'm less knowledgeable about them and it's kinda overwhelming on where to start with limited knowledge. (truthfully I have yet to play a official touhou game but I've practiced on many that are similar in gameplay) Any tips on where to start with the forum? I hope to be able to share my love for this series with everyone else at some point in time, thank you!

Hello Colticide, it's nice to meet you. I'm sure, in time, you'll love touhou as much as the rest of us. As for the forum, I'm new here as well, and pretty new to the forum scene in general. So we have some common ground. Also, I'm pretty sure you can purchase the Touhou originals on Amazon, I'm not sure about the PC-98 games though. I'm not sure exactly how active these forums are, but from the way things sound, I don't think it gets much action at the moment. Whoa, that's the longest welcome I've ever read, and I've read quite a few since coming here. Welcome to the fandom, and welcome to LR. The forums are kinda hit and miss with activity. We need more people to keep things nice and active. For finding fan games, the best place I know of is Hendane! (site down for maintenance at time of posting) They carry the original games, as well. They also sell several music albums. They go to a lot of cons; when I'm looking to get Touhou merchandise, I hit them up first. Hope that helps. Enjoy your stay~ :3

Thanks for the welcome! And thank you for the link, I've been to so many places and only found a few that carry fan games so much appreciated. I know this is a touhou forum but is there also a section where you can talk about other games as well, I love touhou but my background is mostly with a wide variety of games.

when it comes to indie fanbases, i think the homestuck fanbase(hussie is indie right?) owns even the touhou fanbase. don't know the exact details, but i heard its kickstarter reached its goal in record time. but this isn't a homestuck forum (nor am i a homestuck fan, just can't get past the first few pages) so enough of that.



It's nice that you started with touhou music and ended up liking it for the main games. ZUN would be proud. seriously. Touhou is mostly known as "that top down shooter with lolis" (which is only true for Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, the rest, not so much) or "some indie game with great music". most of the casual fans also are just in for the fan-content or music/characters.



So you're interested in breaking in the Gamindustri(i'm pretty sure that's from Neptunia >_>) huh? games being multimedia, there's programming, concept/character/level design, or Music you can focus on. or you can be like ZUN and be a one man army. really, there's lots of options, it's just a matter of dedication and a solid gameplay.



How active is the forum? it's as Genichiro said.
are there users who make signatures or avatars? there were many, though none seem to be active at the moment. also, I'm one of them , though i don't make them now at them moment.

Thank you for the response whether it be short or long. The gaming industry part not so much making games, long ago I wanted to do that but this year has shown its scary being a game designer. You can have a job one week and get fired because you're no longer needed, and the pay is pretty bad too. But it's a risk vs rewards environment, but for real though at least 5 studios have shut down this year, one of the biggest has to be THQ. But that's a topic for another time, thank you for the links to those pages!

Greetings and nice to meet you, Colticide! Welcome to Lunatic Red. I can see you've already made a number of posts so I hope you're enjoying your stay here in this quiet little neighborhood. Yeah, pretty much the activity around here is just what the people above you have said. Our forum has been running for nearly 4 years. We've met plenty of cool people along the way, but only a few of them decided to stay in the forums till now.

I can see why you have so many characters that you came to like. They're all very interesting; with different abilities, personalities, and character backgrounds. But what they have in common is that everyone is Gensokyo is a badass.

We have a very active GFX team back then, around late 2010 to mid-2011. Sadly, most of them are inactive right now, but all their GFX works are stunningly beautiful and they also provide GFX requests for avatars & signatures. Moreover, they used to teach some helpful tricks and techniques for anyone who wants to improve their GFX editing skills. You can still find some of their threads here.

If you have any questions about the forum and any of its features, don't hesitate to ask us here, or you can PM any of the staff members about your inquiries. Our forum has recently undergone an upgrade this past April so there are a few new features that I still haven't learned so please bear with us if we won't be able to provide answers to those topics.

Thank you very much, I actually found this place looking for english touhou forums and it stated LR was the 3rd largest forum which is awesome. But I know how it goes, I use to part of a website for 6 years and over time we only really had about 10 members left.

GFX tips would be very helpful, this avy and sig I have now are from years back and I'm a bit rusty. Plus I'm helping with a GFX translation project so some tips and tricks would be very helpful.

Hopefully once I start getting Official Touhou games I can add more to conversations on the forums, as of right now the only ones I've played are old fan games that no one is interested in anymore. Thank you for your time posting and reading my super long intro.
