Hey everybody, my real name's Gabriel, and I come from somewhere you probably wouldn't expect a Touhou fan to hail from - Brazil.
My way towards becoming a Touhou fan is a most unusual one - through user-generated content in another game. More specifically, ModNation Racers had a lot of quality Touhou themed content. TVTropes also was of much assistance on my way to the fandom, thanks to the character profiles.
I've stuck to reading doujins and listening to music until recently, when I got to experience learning the ropes on Hisoutensoku with the aid of a friend and fellow Troper (in the off-chance any of you get to see him, it's Antimatter625). Although one of my favorite games of all-time (Tyrian, a real oldie) is a shooting game, I find Touhou shooters to be frighteningly difficult.
After a long time of playing my friend and only him, he has pointed me to this forum as a possible way to know new people. With that said, my primary purpose in this forum is to know other Hisoutensoku players (and play them, of course). I'd prefer to play other green, inexperienced players for the time being, because I'm still a rather poor player, having barely two weeks of experience with this game. The LR Hamachi room mentioned in the FAQ is going to be a major help, but how does one get to join it?

oh cool. I'm pretty great (*not modest at all*) with the shooters but i struggle with the fighters, so maybe we could learn together. :3 Unfortunately, i don't know a lot of the information you seek. But I'm more than happy to learn with you. Let me see if i can find Ragda...

Welcome, Angel. There are a few Hisoutensoku players around here, though I'm pretty sure most are rather experienced. I'm not all that big into the fighters, but I'm sure you'll find some gaming partners if you look around. Have fun, and enjoy your stay. :3

If you're looking for the LR Hamachi room, you should either PM Baron or go into the Hamachi thread and post there. I've stopped playing a long time ago but I don't think I can face you, cause I love fighters :>

Yes Luny, I found what I wanted in the forum and even managed to get into the Hamachi Room. Sadly, I've been losing the motivation to play Soku since everyone I've met there vastly outclasses me, despite the level of patience and understanding exhibited by some of its players, such as Raitezu, Grumpy McBadmood and Captain M. S. Ryugan. My friend Antimatter625 (who has his own intoduction post) felt the exact same way, even though he's somewhat better than I at Soku.
It doesn't help matters that I've read so many (horror) stories of players getting their butts kicked repeatedly by some spellcards or bosses, to the point that I'm legitimately scared of trying the shooting games.

Don't fear trying out the shooting games; you never know how well you'll do until you try. :3

eh, even if you say that about the shooter, genichiro, he cannot get actual help from here. to my knowledge, nobody here's exactly proficient at the shooters to the point where I'd they can provide actualy starteer help (except maybe zengeku, if he feels like it :V)
I'll say it bluntly: we all suck at the shooters and we shouldn't lie about it. THEN AGAIN, I STARTED WITHOUT HELP, TOO :V but I'm also a prime example of how going into the games blindly will makes you suck for a couple more years than needed to. I know people who've played for 9 months and they're already way above my level. I play for 4 years and something now, so...yeah, I am a horrible example for everything that is considered good.
no, as a matter of fact, don't be scared to try the shooters. everyone is horrible when they start, and everyone stays horrible until much later. don't expect any clears within the first few weeks, possibly months, unless you're some kind of prodigy. Also, don't start to play on easy, it doesn't help you and only leads to you feeling overwhelmed by normal difficulty. there's nothing good about starting with the easiest thing.
as for the fighters. well, I am not exactly good at them, either. I never was plus I am rusty as hell. but the best way to start up is by finding a character you feel you can play best with, practice basic attack pattern and movement (I.e movement for suwako, youmu and the slow characters are vastly different from Reimu or marisa.) and go up against the AI for a bit. once you feel like you've got the basics down go practice some actual combos and learn when it's safe to use them (I.e don't use Reimu's j.5A j.6A j.5B/j.2B j.5C 44/66 j.5A j.6A combo when you're somewhere that is not the air :V - not that I think you'd understand what those numbers and letters mean yet, but that's part of learning the game, too) once you've learnt to incooperate some combos into your playing flow, I'd say you're already above most players here - or at least even. (I can't really judge, but you won't see any player here on dango's level, for example.) don't be frustrated if you're bad, because everyone starts out as such.
also, welcome :V
