Posting for Mizu.

He won't be around for a bit. He honestly has no clue how long. Days. Weeks.

His computer died about an hour ago. BSOD and pure crashing. He's now missing major programs in Windows, such as the Boot Manager, and has no way to get on his computer.

Heres hoping it's fixed soon.

No backup drives? That is like imperativezzz!

I suggest installing windows onto an external, salvaging important stuff on the main drive and then formatting it.

He's already tried restoring, formating, and etc. Nothing seems to be working.

Broken hard drive... That stinks the most. =/

Ah well. Try with an external. At least that will act as a temporary solution.

but no, seriously, hope he fixes that soon. that's one of the wost things that can happen to anyone especially if you use your comp for work/school.

Apperantly can't even get to the windows screen. He just got off his cellphone, so I'll let him know next time he's on it.

Yep, when it boots up it can't find the OS, which is usually linked to a dying/dead HDD.
Most HDDs these days still use physical data storage meaning it will eventually age and damage itself.

Sadly there isnt much he can do to save his data at that point. He can try installing a OS on a new HDD use it to boot the computer, then have damaged HDD as a 2nd HDD transfer as much data over as possible.

Holy crap guys, thanks for all of you worrying about me and what not, I really had a hard time and was depressed when it cratered; I heard three clicks and got Blue Screens and BSODs that became the BOOTMGR missing screen, so I was really freaking depressed.

But my friend Bruce told me to give Linux Mint a try, so I downloaded it, installed it, and presto it worked like a charm.

Its faster and more stable that Seven ever was on my laptop, and I am more than happy right now.

Also Shanghai, my PC was only 7 months old....

I do know what did it; as always, windows did an update and it corrupted. I swear... windows update has screwed over both my laptops too many times.

But again everyone, thanks for caring, I really really appreciate it, and am so glad that I don't have to leave LR; or any place for that matter, like I originally thought!

windows update? breaks installations? what?

even when i testdrove win seven on a vintage laptop the update thingy worked like a charm.

also, be forewarned that there are a lot of essential software that has no linux equivalent. photoshop coms to mind, ms office comes next >_<. the open source "equivalents" just don't cut it.
