Call me Maru. I've come across this place on occasion while seeking answers to my various Touhou questions, and am only just now joining
My story of how I got into Touhou is a rather long one...
You see, as many people have, I myself had gone through a very embarrassing "Japanophile" stage in my earlier years, and I had happened upon a certain Kumikyoku Nico Nico Douga Medley
I began researching each individual, and upon approaching the infamous "Marisa Stole the Precious Thing", I was intrigued to learn that this was a remix of a song from a game called "Touhou" from a group called IOSYS
I did a youtube search of IOSYS and found 2 other fun videos, "Stops at the Diseased Part and Melts Quickly", or better known, "Overdrive", and "FOE"
the bunnygirl in the Overdrive video was an interesting one, and so I began doing some more research on this "Touhou"
Eventually I happened upon a topic for new Touhou players, which led me to a download of Imperishable Night, which was recommended as the game for beginners. I was also happy to learn that the bunnygirl from the Overdrive video was featured in this game, and I downloaded it without batting an eye
Now, upon downloading the game, I had learned that Touhou is a game akin to the classic arcade game Galaga, except with a lot more bullets. I was an arrogant guy at this age, and thought "Pffffft, I can handle it..."
So the download finished and I started up the game. As I said, I was rather arrogant at this age, and as you might have guessed, when I started playing, I went played on Lunatic difficulty...
Needless to say, I "FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF'd" at the game and tossed it away. I quickly learned that I couldn't handle it.
Nevertheless, my liking of this game persisted for a few years, and I continued to research it a little, finding more IOSYS videos, learning some fanon, and learning people's names, especially the bunnygirl, Reisen Udongein Inaba.
A few months back, I guess sometime in mid-late May, I was watching one of my newer discovered videos, featuring a certain frog-like girl we all know and love. My spark for Touhou had suddenly rekindled, and I quickly learned what game she was in. I wanted to fight her, and listen to the awesome original music.
So I quickly found a download of Mountain of Faith and started playing. This time I started out on easy mode. I had trouble of course, but over time, and a few continues, I finally made it to that blue haired woman with the rope around her back. I braced myself for a tough fight, but after about 20(yes, 20, give or take) continues, I finally gave up. I had failed to conquer the mountain of my childhood, and I never saw the elusive frog-girl.
But I was not down. I remembered Imperishable Night, and quickly searched for it. I remember it being a more noob-friendly game. I downloaded it and started playing, and I managed to beat it on easy, with a couple of continues of course. I was certainly better, but I didn't think I was quite ready for the blue haired woman...
So I did some more research on the games. Other than learning how many games there are and all that, I did some research on a bunch of characters too. I learned Kanako's and Suwako's names, Alice and Marisa, I learned more about the IN group...and I found it. My current goal. The music, the character, it sends chills down my spine just thinking about it...
Flandre Scarlet.
As soon as I saw her, as soon as I heard that childish insanity of a theme song, I knew I had to fight her.
But I wasn't ready.
Instead, I went on to download Phantasmagoria of Flower View and Subterranean Animism. I tried PoFV first and didn't really have too much trouble with it, and so moved on to SA. I got to Orin's stage, but never even saw Utsuho.
SA was certainly harder than MoF. It was at this time I went back to MoF, and after a few continues I finally managed to beat Kanako. I was excited. Finally, I get to fight Suwak-wait...credits? No, where's frog-girl? D:
It was only afterwards I learned that she was the EX boss, and the only way to unlock EX mode is to beat it on Normal difficulty with no continues
So I tried that, just to see how different it was...I managed to get to Aya before losing all my lives
Afterwards I turned my attention back to her. Flandre Scarlet. I searched for Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and had a little trouble finding it, but I finally got it and started instantly. Of course I tried it on easy first to get some practice. I made it to Patchouli without too much trouble...then had to continue. Then I got to Sakuya. and used ALL my continues. and STILL couldn't beat her
I could tell this was a tough game...
Ever since then I've been working on my game collection. I'm now only missing Immaterial and Missing Power, Double Spoiler, and Fairy Wars.
I've been practicing too. I'm able to beat IN on Normal, MoF on Normal with a few continues, and EoSD with all my continues, if I'm lucky...
tl;dr: Japan-obsession of my early years made me the Touhou fan I am today
But enough of that. How about my likes and dislikes?
Favorite Character: Reisen Udongein Inaba, Sakuya Izayoi runs a very close second
Least Favorite Character: Kanako Yasaka, because of the nightmare she was when I really started getting into it...
Favorite Game: Scarlet Weather Rhapsody/Hisoutensoku
Best Character(Danmaku): Reimu Hakurei, Homing Amulet type
Best Character(Fighting): Sakuya Izayoi
Goal: Beat Embodiment of Scarlet Devil on Normal with no continues
Recently Touhou has been a source of inspiration for me. A little too much, actually...
I have 3 OCs that are inspired by Touhou characters: Reizumi, a nine-tailed fox, inspired of course by Ran Yakumo, and a little bit by Yukari Yakumo too, Reliscia, a vampire, Remilia of course. Needs a little bit a name edit, and Paltoulei(big name change needed), an oni inspired by Patchouli Knowledge and Suika Ibuki
I suppose this turned into more of a "me and Touhou" thing than an actual introduction of myself...if you've got any questions feel free to ask and I'll try not to write a novel for an answer
